The sub plot where Joey ends up eating his date's dessert is a follow up to something that happened in season seven's "The One with the Cheap Wedding Dress". There Ross and Joey kept mentioning embarrassing things they have done over the years. Ross asks Joey about a time he ate his date's food and Joey's date realizes that Joey must have eaten her crab cake when she went to the restroom, a situation not unlike the one in this episode.

While giving Ross fashion advice, Rachel mentions that she does not know who is running for president, or who that NATO guy is. George W. Bush was running for reelection against Senator John Kerry. The NATO guy she refers to is most likely Retired General Wesley Clark, who also ran in the 2004 election.

The plotline where it is stated that Joey doesn't share food is a bit disturbing when previous episodes have shown him sharing food many times, for instance when Phoebe asks for a sip of his coffee and a bite of his muffins, which she gets.
