Tuppence wants to go to a fancy dress party after she reads a coded message in the personal ads in the newspaper.

Tommy feels too old for partying. However he is persuaded to go dressed as Dr Watson with Tuppence as Sherlock Holmes.

They find in the next booth, a woman stabbed to death. She was Lady Merivale, a well known socialite who was cheating on her husband. Leaving the booth was a man dressed in a newspaper costume. He was Captain Bingo Hale and he gets arrested for her murder.

Lady Merivale had torn a bit of the newspaper costume. Captain Hale's costume has a piece of his costume torn off as well.

Tommy and Tuppence have been engaged by Captain Hale and sadly for him, the future does not look too bright.

This is a nice flighty mystery. If Captain Hale is not the murderer then it leaves the jilted husband as the only other suspect. The question is how especially as Captain Hale had the torn bit of his costume. It was nicely done. Tommy, Tuppence, Inspector Marriott and Albert do make a good team.
