This film held the record for the worst domestic opening weekend of any film opening in more than three thousand theaters. In its opening weekend, it grossed just $3,368,197 at 3,018 theaters, for a per screen average of $1,116 per theater. The final gross was $8,117,637, just over half of the fifteen million dollar production budget.

At the end of the film, Jimmy Buffett wears a Gonzo Fist T-shirt in tribute to his friend, Hunter S. Thompson, who passed away in early 2005. Buffett spent time with Thompson in the Florida Keys where Thompson wrote "The Great Shark Hunt (1979)."
