An excellent follow up to CTR with a few drawbacks
9 July 2019 | by OlicosmicSee all my reviews

As someone who grew up with this game, this game is special to me, as it is not only the first Crash racing game that really sucked me into the series, but also, believe it or not, my first kart racer. I played this before Mario Kart, as well as CTR, if you can believe it, and I remember loving it when I was a kid. After finally tackling the Mario Kart games, as well as the amazing CTR, however, that is where I started to form my final opinion on this game. And, nowadays, I still think it's a really good game, but even with my nostalgia, this doesn't reach the heights of the aforementioned kart racers, as the problems are more prevalent to me, now that I'm an adult. But, still. This game is great fun, and is still one of the better kart racers you could get in the early-mid 2000s. The visuals are colorful, detailed, and packed with charm, the music is, in my opinion, great stuff, with a few tracks that'll get stuck in your head, the gameplay is incredibly satisfying, the track design is varied and well made, the adventure mode is awesome, the amount of modes in this game are great, and the roster is pretty great, as well. This is certainly a great kart racer that has all the makings to be the perfect sequel to CTR. However, a few things, unfortunately, keep it from being that good. The gameplay, here, is a bit slower and much more loose than CTR. It's nothing awful, as the game is still very fun to play, but it can be hard to get used to, especially considering how much harder it is to boost continuously, unlike in CTR. Also, in a weird twist, every boss in the adventure mode is not part of the roster (unless you have the GBA version, which does). I'm not entirely sure why they were all omitted, but this is one thing that is a bit disappointing, especially coming after CTR , which does have all of its bosses in its roster. The only boss you get is Velo, which, admittedly, is awesome, but still. The sound balancing in this game, while not necessarily bad, is a bit wonky. Some sound effects and voices in races can either be a bit quiet or extremely loud, while the music plays at normal volume. I understand how a game like CTR may have this problem, considering that it was on the PS1, but here, it feels a bit unpolished. What's funny is that I never knew about these problems when I was a kid, but now that I have more experience with other kart racers, I can see that this is definitely flawed. But, at the same time, thanks to everything else being as good, if not improved over its predecessor, this is still an excellent follow up to CTR, despite the few drawbacks. I recommend anyone who loves CTR to check this game out at least once, as it is essentially the same formula, but with better visuals. At the same time, it's probably more recommended to play CTR: Nitro Fueled, as that game has all of this games tracks, as well as the better controls from CTR, as well as phenomenal visuals. Still, though. I can't ignore the quality of this game, and while it may be lesser than other kart racers in some areas, the fact that Vicarious Visions managed to make something this good for it being a post-Naughty Dog title really speaks volumes about how good they are at their craft, and I applaud them for it.
