‘Jojo Rabbit’: Michael Giacchino’s Score Is a Bold Statement Against Hate

‘Jojo Rabbit’: Michael Giacchino’s Score Is a Bold Statement Against Hate
Jojo Rabbit” opens with a jaunty march by composer Michael Giacchino over the Fox Searchlight logo, immediately drawing us into director Taika Waititi’s anti-hate, Nazi satire. Aptly titled “Jojo’s March,” it immediately evokes “The Great Escape” and “Hogan’s Heroes” before introducing a sweet children’s choir. This effectively serves as our musical entry into the mind of impressionable Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis), the devoted 10-year-old Hitler Youth member, who idolizes Adolf (Waititi) to the point of creating him as an imaginary friend.

“I love Taika’s work, especially ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ — he’s original and funny,” Giacchino said. “When he called me, I was somewhat surprised, in a way, but excited to talk to him about it. Normally, I’ll wait to see a movie before deciding to do it, but he sent me the script, I fell in love with it, and said ‘yes’ right away.

Composer Michael Giacchino on Setting the Right Tone for ‘Jojo Rabbit’

  • Variety
Composer Michael Giacchino on Setting the Right Tone for ‘Jojo Rabbit’
Michael Giacchino is a widely respected film composer, with an Oscar and a Grammy for “Up” and an Emmy for “Lost,” as well as a Grammy for “Ratatouille.” He is stirring up Oscar buzz again with his score for Fox Searchlight’s “Jojo Rabbit,” written and directed by Taika Waititi. Giacchino talked with Variety about the challenges of that film, as well as his expanding workload, including directing an animated “Star Trek” short. He’ll appear Oct. 18 in concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and at the “Coco” music event at the Hollywood Bowl on Nov. 8-9.

How tricky was it to catch the tone of “Jojo Rabbit”?

I didn’t want the music to be funny. The bulk of the movie has this huge heart, especially in the character of Jojo himself, and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t adding to the zaniness. I wanted to underline the emotional component.

Abominable Review: How to Train Your Baby Yeti

Mark Harrison Oct 14, 2019

The first major collaboration between DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio, Abominable isn't nearly as bad as the title suggests...

Having previously co-produced Kung Fu Panda 3 with Pearl Studio, DreamWorks Animation now brings us the Chinese animation house's first original film, Abominable, which is a perfectly lovely movie whose title doesn't suit it at all. From writer-director Jill Culton, the film offers up a lively and colourful road trip across China with three youngsters and the baby yeti they've taken into their care.

When the film begins, teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet) is getting over her father's untimely death by throwing herself into the gig economy and escaping to the rooftop of her apartment building by night. It's there that she finds a big white fluffy creature hiding from a private scientific organization's roving helicopters and staring wistfully at a nearby “Visit Everest” billboard.

Robot Chicken Season 10: Gordon Ramsay Grills Celebs in an Exclusive Clip

Joseph Baxter Oct 9, 2019

Check out this exclusive clip from Robot Chicken Season 10, showing a celebrity edition of MasterChef gone insanely awry.

Robot Chicken continues its wanton ridicule of any and all things in the currently-running tenth season, and the Adult Swim stop-motion series, which launched back in February 2005, continues to prove that hasn't run out of steam, or action figures, with which to parody with perfection.

Pertinently, Den of Geek has an exclusive preview clip for you, showcasing a celebrity edition of MasterChef, in which the notoriously harangue-hurling host, Gordon Ramsay, handles a bizarre lineup of celebrities. – That is, if Bob’s Burgers’ Bob Belcher, Ratatouille’s Alfredo Linguini, SpongeBob SquarePants himself and South Park‘s long-departed soul-singing cafeteria cook, Chef, qualify as “celebrities” in the conventional sense.

Fun Ratatouille Fan Theory Debunked by Director Brad Bird

  • MovieWeb
One particularly heartwarming Ratatouille fan theory has officially been debunked. The Pixar movie is a fan-favorite, so many were on board to watch it again with a brand-new set of eyes. Looking at a movie from another point of view is part of the fun about being a fan in general, especially when it can get one to think outside the box and find hidden connections that may or may not have been done on purpose. Ratatouille director Brad Bird has revealed that the connections from within his movie are not what they seem.

In Ratatouille, Patton Oswalt voices Remy the rat. The animal has an uncanny sense of taste and smell, which brings him into the world of cooking. He begins to cook at Gusteau's Restaurant in Paris through the help of Alfredo Linguini. Notorious food critic Anton Ego has held a grudge against the restaurant and the deceased

‘The Iron Giant’ Is a Classic, But Brad Bird Still Accepts Some Blame For Its Box Office

‘The Iron Giant’ Is a Classic, But Brad Bird Still Accepts Some Blame For Its Box Office
Brad Bird’s “The Iron Giant,” the box-office failure that became Hollywood’s last great 2D-animated movie, celebrates its 20th anniversary today. Warner Bros. premiered it at the Tcl Chinese Theater, where it will screen the cult classic tonight, and Bird still marvels at the unlikely success of his directorial debut, a 1957 Cold War fable about a giant alien robot (Vin Diesel).

“It became a success, in spite of serious obstacles,” said Bird, who went on to win Oscars at Pixar for “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille.” “It has survived by great word of mouth. That’s incredibly gratifying because it’s not tied to hype or products. It’s just about people discovering the story and being moved by it. It’s a testament to the efforts of an underdog team that made the film.”

Based on a Ted Hughes novel and initially developed by The Who’s Pete Townshend as an animated musical,

Hulu's reboot of Veronica Mars comes with a cast of colorful characters, including one quaint true crime connoisseur named Penn Epner played by none other than comedian Patton Oswalt. Known for his hilarious television characters, Oswalt has deep roots in the stand-up and sitcom worlds. In fact, his first acting gig was on the Seinfeld episode "The Couch." His TV career has been a widely successful one, as he starred as Kevin James's nerdy best friend on King of Queens from 1998 to 2007.
