Planted the seeds for my love affair with the movie
20 February 2017 | by Mr-FusionSee all my reviews

Movie tie-in games have always been incredibly hit-or-miss, but Data East scored a real hit with "RoboCop". Oddly enough, the sci-fi masterpiece works very nicely as an arcade beat 'em up, and roaming the streets with fists of justice is a lot of fun; and sometimes really tough. At various points, you're hit by a litany of thugs and bullets, and death comes quickly. But it's not impossible, and were I to actually find a working cabinet (it's my white whale), I'd donate plenty of quarters to the cause (at least there are emulators). The movie might've been too violent for me at that age, but the game had me jonesin' for it nonetheless.

But it really comes down to the sound design, which is excellent. And that's why I've had a real soft spot for this game for almost 30 years. I remember (distinctly) overhearing the intro screen while wandering an arcade in Central Ohio, back in the late-'80s (it was Scarborough Mall, since we're dealing with vivid memory here). I've had that intro etched into my brain ever since, and it's a happy memory.

But I'm digressing. Bottom line is that it's of high quality, looks and plays very well, and dammit, I'm gonna find one someday.
