Strictly for fans of Chuck Connors' chest
17 August 2002 | by dinky-4See all my reviews

It's probably unfair to judge this awkward merger of several TV episodes as a movie because it was never intended to be such a thing. In fact, these episodes from NBC's "Branded" were obviously selected not because of any plot connection but because they happened to feature actors such as Burt Reynolds and Lee Van Cleef who later became boxoffice names. Therefore, those who try to find a consistent story here will go crazy.

However, those who enjoy ogling Chuck Connors' 45-inch chest, (especially when it's put into various "bondage" situations), will find a number of rewards in the middle episode. Here Chuck becomes a prisoner of irate Indians who subject him to some of those sado-masochistic, homo-erotic torments which managed to slip into so many TV westerns of the late 1950's and early 1960's. After stripping him to the waist, (and even at age 44 Chuck still looked pretty impressive in the physique department), the Indians pull him along behind a horse, tie him up inside a tepee, order him to fight a sword duel while swinging on a vine, and then force him into a knife-fight with Greg Morris which is staged inside a ring of fire. Best of all they spreadeagle him vertically between two tree-trunks and let him roast in the blazing sun. During this Disneyland-of-torture, Chuck's bare torso gleams so brightly with sweat that you almost need sunglasses to reduce the glare.

The Marquis de Sade would have loved it, and yet many of these old TV westerns are now shown on cable channels which bill them as "family" entertainment!
