Showtime Takes Boutique Approach Amid Intense Competition for Talent, Premium TV Viewers
Showtime is coming to a crossroads as its signature series for most of the past decade, “Homeland,” heads into its ninth and final season next year.

This transition comes at a fraught time for established premium TV players. The competition has exploded and the benchmark for content expenditure is now set not by longtime rival HBO but by a digital upstart with seemingly limitless coffers and a $300-plus share price (aka Netflix).

Showtime Networks CEO David Nevins is steering CBS Corp.’s pay cable unit through a significant expansion as it delivers more original scripted and unscripted series, documentaries, specials, and sports-related programming than at any time in its 42-year history. Growth spurred by the availability of the channel as a standalone streaming app since 2015 has helped bolster the company at a time when it has to offer more programming to remain a must-keep for pay TV viewers.

PBS: An Appreciation for the Vegetables of TV (Column)

  • Variety
The Television Critics Association press tour is much like one of its omnipresent candy buffets: seemingly endless, and packed with so many different treats that just looking at it inspires a sugar rush/crash. As networks try to stand out and make their upcoming schedule seem the most attractive (especially in the ever-swollen age of Peak TV), they pull out all the stops and stars to make sure that the journalists in attendance will remember them come premiere time.

One network, however, makes itself stand out in all the best ways by doing exactly none of that.

Sure, PBS offers fewer flashy stars and urgent breaking news. But every panel it presented over two days at this year’s summer tour was on brand, informative, and incisive. Befitting the public broadcasting network, many panels were for nonfiction programming across an astonishing range of topics.

In 45-minute spurts, we learned about

Eddie Izzard interview: Victoria And Abdul, acting, Robin Williams and more

Ben Mortimer Sep 13, 2017

Eddie Izzard on his acting career, Victoria & Abdul, Clint Eastwood, Robin Williams, directing films and more...

Eddie Izzard is back on the big screen this weekend in Victoria & Abdul. It's the new film from director Stephen Frears, a sort-of follow-up to Mrs Brown that sees Dame Judi Dench playing Queen Victoria in a story that's recently been discovered about her later life. We got a chance to chat with Eddie Izzard about his role in the movie, and potentially directing...

Could you clear something up for me, as I swear I heard a hint of it in the film - did you give Bertie a slight German accent?

Maybe mentally. He did have a tapped ‘r’, because his first years there was German in it, but it was only the hint of it, I didn’t overtly push it.

I was watching your interview this morning on This Morning,

MoreHorror visits 'Queen Mary's Dark Harbor' 2016

By Jonathan Weichsel

MoreHorror.com

On Thursday September 26th I got to take everybody's favorite scream queens, Jessica Cameron and Heather Dorff, to the grand opening of Queen Mary's Dark Harbor, for a night of adventure, thrills and scares. Queen Mary's Dark Harbor has become a perennial haunted attraction in the greater Los Angeles area for good reason; it features fun mazes and a really great atmosphere in one of the best locations in La.

We went through all of the mazes, and all three of us agree that the best maze is Circus. Not only does Circus have the best scare actors, but it is also the most physically challenging maze, with a ball pit, mirror room, and other obstacles. We also enjoyed, Sideshow which features a room filled with fog and hanging white curtains, so that your visibility is limited to about six inches. We also enjoyed Panic,

MoreHorror on the scene: Queen Mary's Dark Harbor 2015

By Jonathan Weichsel

MoreHorror.com

Queen Mary, the iconic ship turned hotel in Long Beach, is quickly becoming the hot spot for seasonal events. Queen Mary's Dark Harbor is a massive Halloween fair featuring six elaborate haunted mazes, some unique monsters, a whole bunch of live shows, and a lot of carnival food. I visited Dark Harbor with my good friend Jessica Cameron, director of Truth or Dare and Mania, and we both had an amazing time.

The best haunted maze was also one of this year's new additions. Lullaby maze tells the true story of Scary Mary, a little girl who drowned in a pool aboard The Queen Mary in the 1920's. Now she haunts the ship, terrorizing visitors. Lullaby tells a coherent, intense ghost story that never lets up. The little girl Mary is a unique, totally creepy ghost that will send shivers down your spine.

20 Best Movie Franchises, As Ranked By Their Villains

  • Cinelinx
Some of the most memorable characters in movie history are antagonists. Here are our picks for the franchises that have make the biggest impression based on their villains alone.

A great antagonist in a film can make the effort of the protagonist seem more important. The hero’s plight becomes elevated to have meaning beyond just simple entertainment. It is those struggles that define some of the best movies ever made, and give the audience something to really cheer about.

It’s challenging enough to make one good antagonist, but what happens when you need to make a sequel? What happens if your antagonist has died but your protagonist needs more adventures to keep them busy or complete their story? Maintaining quality villains in a movie franchise is not easy to do. Some movie franchises have had better success at maintaining great antagonists, to the point of often being more

An octopus, Benedict Cumberbatch, and the Penguins of Madagascar

  • Cineplex
What do you get when you mix an evil octopus, the internet’s boyfriend Benedict Cumberbatch, and some spying penguins? The Penguins of Madagascar.

A spin-off of the popular “Afro Circus”-singing franchise sees sidekicks Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico upgraded to leading bird status in their brand new adventure that sees them coming nose-to-nose- or beak-to-tentacle, as it were - with a dastardly octopus named Dave (John Malkovich) who’s bent on destroying the world. But they’re not in this mission alone: the super-secret spy agency The North Wind has lent Agent Classified (Cumberbatch) to the cause.

The Penguins’ vocal cast includes all four of the original voice actors to provide their signature sounds while the film mixes in characters voiced by the likes of Peter Stormare, Andy Richter, and Ken Jeong. Tom McGrath, the voice of Skipper, is one of the writers and original creators of the Madagascar series.

Fox Moving Forward with P.T. Barnum Musical 'The Greatest Showman on Earth' with Hugh Jackman

A major studio has not produced an original live-action movie musical since 1992's Newsies, starring little kid Christian Bale. I am talking wholly original, here. Moulin Rouge! in 2001 counts in that it was original story, but it only featured one and a half original songs. Therefore, it does not fit the criteria. Well, Fox is taking a chance on The Greatest Showman on Earth centered on P.T. Barnum, legendary co-creator of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Hugh Jackman, who is now getting pretty good reviews on Broadway in Jez Butterworth's The River (though, the play itself is being met with a bit harsher criticism), is set to play Barnum in the film, which plans to start production in New York next summer. Bill Condon penned the latest draft of the screenplay. Michael Gracey, a former animator who has lined up a few projects to direct but has not started them yet,

Amanda Holden reveals sexual assault by 'famous comedian'

The Britain's Got Talent judge says she was attacked by an unnamed comic, 21st-century comics grapple with homosexuality, and David Brent realises his rock-god dreams

Not much to laugh about in today's top story, as Amanda Holden writes in her autobiography that she was once assaulted by "a famous comedian". The Britain's Got Talent judge claims she was cornered by the unnamed comic at a public event, during a period when she was patching up her marriage to Les Dennis after an affair with Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey. "[Dennis and I] went to an event together," Holden writes, "and on my way back from the loo, I was cornered by a famous comedian, who tried to kiss me and put his hands in places they shouldn't have been. I was scared and tried to push him away … but he wasn't put off … My body went limp, and I just stood there

Your 2013 Halloween Season TV Preview (abridged) with Schedules

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

So here’s the 2013 Halloween Seasonal TV Preview,

Buckets of vodka save circus elephants from freezing to death

Buckets of vodka save circus elephants from freezing to death
London, Dec 16: Circus keepers saved two elephants from dying in minus 41C Siberian blizzard by giving them buckets of Russian vodka to drink.

The animals had been forced to abandon their wooden trailer when a heater caught fire, while they were travelling to Minsk, and were soon struggling with the Arctic temperatures.

"We mixed 10 litres of vodka with warm water, which kept the chill at bay," the Daily Express quoted Polish circus official Leonid Labo as saying.

A spokesman for the fire brigade which was called to the blaze in the Tatar district of Novosibirsk region said, "The elephants were huge but really friendly."

"As soon as they were told to go out into the cold they obeyed.

"They had to.
