Has plenty to enjoy and one of the best of the series
26 March 2015 | by TheLittleSongbirdSee all my reviews

Herman's cartoons I do find hit-and-miss but his and Katnip's early collaborations make for among the better end of Famous Studios' inconsistent output. Of which Of Mice and Magic is one of the strongest of them.

Of Mice and Magic is on the rudimentary side story-wise and also somewhat formulaic, following the same basic general formula of the Herman and Katnip cartoons, and the dialogue is not particularly memorable, which are my sole criticisms. But Of Mice and Magic also does something different from most of their output, which is the theme it has, which is a great one and put to good use here. Thanks to some of the most inventive and funniest gags of the series and the hugely entertaining rapport between Herman and Katnip. Herman doesn't do much original but is still funny and Katnip is a good adversary. The mice don't have an awful lot to do but are suitably poignant.

Arnold Stang, Sid Raymond, Jack Mercer and Mae Questel provide energetic and distinctive voice work. The animation is very good indeed and one of the better looking Herman and Katnip cartoons, not looking low-budget at all. The drawing is smooth and the lush colours equally appeals, it holds up very well. But the star is the music score, which as ever is outstanding and like the heart and soul of the cartoon(from personal opinion it is the only consistently good thing in the series), being vibrantly orchestrated and rhythmically energetic. All in all, Of Mice and Magic is an enjoyable and very good cartoon, well worth watching and one of the better outings in the Herman and Katnip series. 8/10 Bethany Cox
