Storyline

Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont are seductive, manipulative step-siblings who get what they want when they want it. Kathryn makes a bet with Sebastian: Sebastian must bed Annette, daughter of the headmaster at their school, before the end of summer break. Annette has stated that she would wait until love and marriage to sleep with a man. If Kathryn wins, she gets Sebastian's vintage 1959 Jaguar Roadster. If Sebastian wins, he gets Kathryn, the only girl he knows he'll never have. Also in play is Cecile, a naïve girl whose mother had enlisted Kathryn to help her fit in at her new school. However, Kathryn (with Sebastian's help) plans to ruin Cecile's reputation as revenge on Kat's ex-boyfriend, who left her for Cecile.

Trivia

For legal reasons, writer and director Roger Kumble had to ask all of the actresses auditioning for Cecile how old they were, because of a graphic sex scene between the character and Sebastian in the movie. "So we were bringing in all of these people", he recalled to Cosmopolitan, "and they were all good, but I remember Selma (Blair) came in and I said, 'How old are you?' And she goes (in Cecile's bratty voice) 'How old are you?' And she was so obnoxious, and I couldn't get it out of my head." See more »

Goofs

The first time the inside of Sebastian's journal is shown, "The Bet" page is opposite the page with Kathryn's picture and the phrase "I'm a bitch". At the end of the movie, Kathryn receives a copy of the journal and opens to "The Bet" page which is now opposite Cecile's page. See more »

Quotes

Kathryn: Oh, Sebastian? That little wager of yours? Count me in.
Sebastian: What are the terms?
Kathryn: If I win, then that hot little car of yours is mine.
Sebastian: And if I win?
Kathryn: [Takes off her jacket to reveal a skimpy-looking tank top] I'll give you something you've been obsessing about ever since our parents got married.
Sebastian: Be more specific.
Kathryn: In English? I'll fuck your brains out.
Sebastian: [a little shocked for a moment, recovers] What makes you think I'll go for that bet? That is a 1956 Jaguar Roadster.
Kathryn: Because I'm the only person you can't...

Pretty good teen film
21 March 2015 | by davispittmanSee all my reviews

This film is apparently based or very loosely derived from the classic 80s film Dangerous Liaisons, which I learned just recently. I think people are wrong when they say that you can't do that with high school characters, 17 or 18 year olds are adults, they can have sex, get hurt, feel like killing themselves, or die. This can be done in high school, and I feel like the film did it well. Sarah Michelle Gellar was my favorite character, not because she's evil, but because I think she was PERFECT as Kathryn!! I feel like Ryan Philipe and Reese Witherspoon were great in their roles also. Now, for the movies faults, no. 1 is that kiss, yah the famous one, that was pretty pointless and unnecessary, what was it Just trying to keep the guys entertained. Stupid! No. 2, some of Cecil's lines were pretty stupid and weird, and Selma Blair as Cecil was a little awkward at moments, like the while Secret Society dance thing, um just no!! But overall a 7/10 is perfectly fair. A pretty good teen and adult film. Oh, almost forgot, I loved how they ended it with Kathryn, I'm not gonna say how they did it, watch it for yourself.
