The story of four young Australians trying their luck in 1960's London.
In 1966, Catherine Macaleese (Jacqueline McKenzie) is counting the days until she meets her father, a distant childhood memory, and starts a new life with him in England. Heather Randall (Rebecca Gibney) is Catherine's cousin and closest friend who puts her marriage plans on hold to travel on the Oriana. Richard Turner (John Polson), an aspiring journalist, decides to try his luck on Fleet Street, and promises his fiancée, Sandy, that he will return in a few months. Jack Gill (Jeremy Sims), heading along a path of self-destruction, embarks on the journey at the last minute. On board, Jack disappears with the group's money and the trio arrive penniless. The only contact they have is a friend of Jack's, the mysterious Terence Foster-Burrows (Jonathan Firth). He shows little surprise for their predicament and offers them rooms in the Palace.
Kangaroo Palace is a compelling Australian drama with an all-star cast as the story is told of four Australians who leave their birth country for the home of The Beatles, the fashion industry, drugs and night clubs. In London, they confront sex, destiny, love, failure and success.
It is 1966 and Catherine Macaleese is counting the days. Catherine is restless. She believes she was born in the wrong town and the wrong country. Her father, a distant childhood memory, has been living in England and Catherine is sure her future lies with him. Richard Turner, an aspiring journalist, decides to travel to England with his mate, Keith and try his luck on Fleet Street. Richard promises his fiancee, Sandy that he will be back within a few months. Heather Randall is Catherine's cousin and closest friend. She puts her marriage plans on hold and joins Catherine on the Oriana heading to England. Heather is going to have one fling before the predictability of her marriage, children and a mortgage. At the last minute Jack takes Keith's place on the ship. Keith's loyalty to his pregnant girlfriend is more powerful than the chance of a new life. Back home, Heather is ready for life in a small Australian country town and settles down to raising a family with Macka. Catherine is working with Simon, photographing the high-class fashion and pop groups. Her seemingly ideal life is far removed from the country town of her birth. She lives on a luxury houseboat on the Thames with Simon's sister, Anne. Catherine has put her old life and dreams behind her. Richard is still deeply in love with Catherine and a chance meeting leaves him dejected and hurt. There is no place for him in her new life. London offers Jack a freedom he previously thought impossible. Teaming up with the anti-establishment Terence, the pair flaunt society's conventions, living life to the fullest.
