"Bye Bye America" is the story of an unusual journey, generated from discussions director Jan Schütte had with émigrés he met while walking along the boardwalk in Brighton Beach. The film depicts characters whose fate is to search for a homeland, with no great fuss about it but with laconic humour and an often fairy-tale ambience. Isaak, his friend Moshe, and Moshe's wife, Genovefa, leave New York and set off for Poland. The three of them are all in the same boat, get stranded in Germany, celebrate Christmas in Berlin, and finally end up in Poland... Written by Harvard Film Archive

Jan Schuette takes us on a tour of Europe with his quirky characters.
5 February 2009 | by FilmCriticLalitRaoSee all my reviews

Auf Wiedersehen Amerika is directed by Jan Schuette,a German director who made the outstanding "Drachenfutter",a brilliant film about illegal immigrants and their difficult lives in Germany.Although there is hardly a common element which could be found in these two films if we compare them from a narrative angle. But if we watch this film from a spiritual angle, we will find that human beings are same everywhere as far as ways of expressing feeling is concerned. The only thing that matters the most is how human beings are able to express themselves in an amicable manner. After watching these two films you will agree that Jan Schuette is interested in people of all races, colors and cultures. Auf Wiedersehen Amerika is almost like a family film which can be enjoyed by everyone. It is about some old people who leave USA to come to Europe. In the lives of human beings nations, borders and languages do not play a major role.Such is the theme of this film as we are shown how old people are fond of the place where they were born.Jan Schutte does not force his actors to be sentimental about their life. This does not happen in the film as we are shown that in the lives of human beings miracles will happen at regular intervals for everybody.
