‘Party Of Five’ Reboot Takes Aim At Donald Trump Immigration Era – Tribeca TV

  • Deadline
Many TV reboots hinge on nostalgia, or the simple rush of seeing the familiar gang reunited.

Freeform’s Party of Five has a more ambitious goal. The reboot of the Fox drama that aired from 1994 to 2000 revolves around the issue of immigration and the current approach taken by the administration of Donald Trump.

“It’s a better story than the original,” executive producer and writer Amy Lippman, who also created the original show, said after a sneak preview of the pilot episode Saturday at the Tribeca TV Festival.

After periodically exploring a revival of the show over the years, she recalled, “Three years ago, we began to read stories about immigrant families that were going to be separated. It seemed as if the story that we told about kids living on their own in the wake of their parents’ sudden absence was a story that was playing out in newspapers everywhere.

Deadline reports that the new series will be a “modern-day continuation of the strange, terrifying, and sexy saga of the Collins family of Collinsport, Maine — a mysterious, influential, publicity-shy group hiding a ghastly secret: For the past 400 years, they’ve lived under a curse that bedevils their blue blood with every imaginable supernatural creature and horror.”

The series is being written by Mark B. Perry, who was a writer on my favorite series of all time, The Wonder Years, as well as Party of Five and Ghost Whisperer. Perry was a huge fan of the original series as a kid, and has always dreamed of remaking this series.

Break Out the Tissues - The Heartbreaking First Trailer For the Party of Five Remake Is Here
If you're in need of a great cry (and we all are every now and again), the official first trailer for Freeform's remake of Party of Five will definitely do the trick. Unlike how the '90s family drama followed siblings dealing with their parents dying after a tragic car accident, the updated version utilizes a more timely tragedy: the Acostas' parents are deported back to Mexico for being undocumented, leading to a distressing split with their five children.

The emotional trailer follows the kids as they band together and learn to cope with the separation, and as the oldest, Emilio (Brandon Larracuente), fights to keep them together against threats to split them up by social services. Emily Tosta, Niko Guardado, and Elle Paris Legaspi also star as the other Acosta siblings. "[Mom and Dad] managed with a lot less than what we have," Guardado's Beto says in the trailer. "They figured it out,
