The Equalizer screenwriter working on “re-imagining” of Universal Soldier

Richard Wenk, the screenwriter behind The Equalizer, The Expendables 2 and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, has revealed that he’s been working on a “re-imagining” of the cult 1992 action sci-fi Universal Soldier starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.

“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called Universal Soldier,” Wenk tells Discussing Film. “Very much like The Equalizer, it’s the title that inspired me and not the movies…I’m just about to finish (the script) and turn it in this week.”

Directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day), Universal Soldier saw Van Damme and Lundgren as two U.S. soldiers killed in Vietnam, who are resurrected decades later as part of the secret military program, UniSol, to create an elite counter-terrorism unit.

There's a Universal Soldier Reboot in the Works From The Equalizer Screenwriter

The 1992 action film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren is the latest film franchise to get the big Hollywood reboot. The movie is currently being written by Richard Wenk, the screenwriter of The Equalizer. He announced the news himself during an interview with Discussing Film saying:

“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called ‘Universal Soldier’…very much like ‘The Equalizer,’ it’s the title that inspired me and not the movies…I’m just about to finish (the script) and turn it in this week.”

I like how he has to make a point to say that his project is a “re-imagining”. But, we all know that regardless of what he wants us to call it, the movie

‘The Equalizer’ Screenwriter Developing ‘Universal Soldier’ Reimagining

‘The Equalizer’ Screenwriter Developing ‘Universal Soldier’ Reimagining
One of the coolest Jean-Claude Van Damme movies was Universal Soldier, which co-starred Dolph Lundgren as two deceased soldiers who become military cyborgs. A hit back in 1992, it spawned three sequels, two made-for-tv movies and even a video game. Universal Pictures continues to see value in the franchise and is developing a remake with The Equalizer screenwriter Richard Wenk. “I will […]

Apparently There’s A Universal Soldier Reboot In The Works

Universal Soldier is a rare movie franchise that actually got better in its later sequels. The original and its follow-up The Return are basically okay schlock, but 2009’s Regeneration was a weirdly great film (and Van Damme was brilliant in it) and Day of Reckoning wasn’t half bad, either.

Perhaps buoyed up by the latter two films’ success, screenwriter Richard Wenk has revealed in an interview that he’s now working on a “re-imagining” of the franchise. Wenk, who wrote The Equalizer, explains that his script features a sole soldier rather than the pair seen in the original movies and is eager to stress that this is not a remake, saying:

“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called ‘Universal Soldier

‘Overlord’ Review: J.J. Abrams’ Nazi Monster Movie Is Intense, Ravishing, and Surprisingly Deep — Fantastic Fest

  • Indiewire
‘Overlord’ Review: J.J. Abrams’ Nazi Monster Movie Is Intense, Ravishing, and Surprisingly Deep — Fantastic Fest
Overlord” invites low expectations and gleefully rises above them. Yes, this is a B-movie produced with studio resources about American soldiers battling Nazi zombies in WWII. But despite some underdeveloped characters and obvious B-movie tropes, “Overlord” goes beyond the call of duty with a riveting story that digs far deeper than this material usually goes for.

In the J.J. Abrams-produced genre hybrid, director Julius Avery takes the real-world horrors of Josef Mengele’s WWII Holocaust experiments to a more terrifying extreme: the Nazis have developed a special serum to reanimate their dead. Either by picking up deceased troopers off the side of the road, or simply kidnapping and murdering the locals, the S.S. has weaponized the villagers of an occupied town. This queasy premise sets the stage for a special kind of payoff, as a black man flips the script on these sadistic sociopaths’ final solution with a much better one.

Dolph Lundgren Will Host An Action Movie Game Show For Television

Dolph Lundgren is making the jump to television as the Universal Soldier actor will host an action movie inspired game show called Take The Tower. The show, which is set to air on Britain's ITV around this time next year, will feature contestants putting their knowledge of action films to the test in a series of trivia questions and physical challenges.

Variety reported the first season of the series will consist of a six-parts and feature hour-long episodes. Of course, I'm super disappointed this isn't going to make its debut stateside, although I'm sure if it's a hit we'll see it sooner than later. Let's hope it's as good as it sounds!

Rambo 5 Almost Had Stallone Fighting a Monster

Rambo 5 Almost Had Stallone Fighting a Monster
Rambo 5 looks like it's finally going to happen, as Millenium Films is in the process of launching presales at the Cannes Film Festival, which is going on now in France. Sylvester Stallone is expected to begin shooting the project in September, assuming all goes well. This time around, John Rambo is going to be taking on the Mexican cartel, but it didn't start out that way. It turns out, Rambo 5 was originally going to feature Stallone taking on an intelligent, inhuman monster.

The last time we saw the legendary character on screen was in 2008's Rambo, which was ultraviolet and successful enough at the box office to warrant talk of a fifth installment. When Nu Image and Millennium Films announced a fifth movie in 2009, it was referred to as Rambo V: The Savage Hunt. Initial reports indicated that the movie would have taken place in the Pacific Northwest

Now on Blu-ray: Jcvd Then And Now, Black Eagle and Kickboxer: Retaliation

One of the great action stars of our time, Jean-Claude Van Damme, "The Muscles from Brussels", has been having a renaissance of sorts over the last few years. After having largely disappeared from the limelight in the late '90s and early '00s, he burst back on the the scene with the anti-autobiographical meta-narrative film Jcvd (2008) in which he played a version of himself weary of the world of direct to video dreck.  In the several years since he's still making those low budget actioners, but with renewed vigor after having realized, along with a legion of new fans, that there is a place in the future for Jean-Claude Van Damme. He's bounced back with critically successful turns in the reinvigorated Universal Soldier series as...

It Appears There’s Going to be a “Lionheart 2”

Is anyone else waiting to hear a “haha” when it comes to a second Lionheart movie? Jean-Claude Van Damme has definitely not been idle throughout the last decade or so when it comes to drumming up more interest for his brand and getting himself back into the mainstream. But after revisiting one of his other movies, Universal Soldier, and bringing Dolph Lundgren back and bringing Scott Adkins in, some of them seem a tad, well, overdone. Lionheart was one movie that seemed to have a pleasing ending to it, as everything was wrapped up neatly with a bow and the

Five Things You Didn’t Know about Scott Adkins

Scott Adkins is the king of the action sequels, or so it’s been said a couple of times now. You’ll typically find him in parts 2 and up of various films, such as Undisputed, the Expendables, and even another sequel to Universal Soldier. He’s done plenty of standalone movies that weren’t as hyped and went straight to DVD or even Netflix, but if you watch him in action you’ll be suitably impressed. The guy is in excellent physical condition and makes any movie he’s in look just a little better with the awesome moves he has. His acting ability is
