Quotes

[first lines]
Jimmy Schwartz: Richard. Hold it. Richard, what's the matter? I'm not selling those skis to my mother. Please, a more neon sound. Remember: to be free, to soar like an eagle, to slip the surly bonds of earth. Right? That's the feel.

One of the Least Interesting 90's Thriller
11 August 2019 | by gracehenson-30790See all my reviews

For a thriller, Consenting Adults isn't very thrilling, which is probably the cardinal sin of the genre. It's well cast with such talented actors as Kevin Kline, Kevin Spacey, Forest Whitaker, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, but right as it should be getting good, it slows down to crawl.

Kline plays a music composer with a new neighbor played by Spacey. Spacey has a stunning wife with a killer singing voice, so naturally, Kline is rather taken with her. Spacey keeps trying to prove what a great friend he can be by offering to pay off some of Kline's debts via an insurance scam. It goes off without a hitch, but then Spacey has another suggestion. He knows how much Kline admires his wife and, since Spacey also admires Kline's wife (Mastrantonio), he suggests they sneak into each of their bedrooms late at night while it's dark and have sex with each others wives.

This entire concept is ludicrous and would never happen on this planet, but Kline goes through with it and ends up getting framed for a murder and he's stuck trying to prove his innocence for another hour (while feels like three).

Consenting Adults is easily one of the lesser of the major big studio thrillers from the early 90's and is easily skippable and, blessedly, mostly forgotten.
