Stephen Colbert Turns Donald Trump Into a Monstrous Plant in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Mashup (Video)
Donald Trump’s presidency is like a plant. His words, not ours. He compared the movement that he and his supporters have made to a seed slowly taking root while at his rally in North Carolina on Monday.

So naturally Stephen Colbert and company asked with their latest mashup video Tuesday night: “If Donald Trump was a plant, what plant would he be?”

The Late Show” team came up with the other-worldly, blood-crazed monstrosity from the 1986 cult classic musical “Little Shop of Horrors,” now called “Bigly Shop of Horrors,” to quote one of the president’s other best words.

Sold-Out ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ Revival Adds Eight Weeks; Jonathan Groff Stars
The Off Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors, already sold out well before its first preview on Sept. 17, has released an additional eight weeks of tickets, producers announced today. Tickets for the landmark Howard Ashman & Alan Menken musical, set for the Westside Theatre and starring Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and Christian Borle, are now on sale through Sunday, January 19, 2020.

Directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer, Little Shop officially opens on Thursday, October 17. As previously announced, Tony nominee Gideon Glick (To Kill A Mockingbird) will join the production for a two-week (November 5 through November 17) as Seymour while Groff is on a scheduled leave.

Also in the cast: Tom Alan Robbins, Kingsley Leggs, Ari Groover, Salome Smith, Joy Woods, Stephen Berger, Chris Dwan, Kris Roberts, Chelsea Turbin, Eric Wright, and Teddy Yudain.

‘Mockingbird’s Gideon Glick Will Mind The ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ During Jonathan Groff’s Two-Week Leave
Exclusive: Gideon Glick, To Kill a Mockingbird‘s Tony-nominated Dill Harris, will drop by the upcoming Little Shop of Horrors for a quick visit, filling in for star Jonathan Groff, star of Netflix’s Mindhunter, during the latter’s pre-scheduled two-week leave from the production.

The announcement was made by producers today.

The Little Shop of Horrors Off Broadway revival will begin previews Tuesday, September 17, at the Westside Theatre, with opening night set for Thursday, October 17. Glick will take the role of Seymour Tuesday, November 5 through Sunday, November 17. Groff returns on Tuesday, November 19.

Glick, who has moved Mockingbird‘s audience with his poignant and very funny portrayal of the young Truman Capote-based Dill since last year’s opening of the Aaron Sorkin adaptation of the Harper Lee novel. The London-Based Sherlock Holmes is coming to The Golden State. Due to the state's $330 million program, 10 projects have been approved to receive tax credits for shooting there, and Sherlock Holmes 3 is one of them. California's Film Commission estimates that together, they will generate $310 million in spending across the state.

Among the ten is Robert Downey Jr.'s (Iron Man) Sherlock Holmes 3, The next project from the Russo Brothers and Tom Holland, Cherry, Will Smith's drama King Richard from Warner Bros. which tells the story of tennis stars Venus and Serena William's father, Universal's Purge 5, the Little Shop of Horrors remake, American Pie Presents: Girls Rule, Janis, Macbeth, Pandora and an untitled Atomic Monster project. 58 films applied for tax credits during the June 17 to 21 application period. In an official statement, the new California Film Commission executive director, Colleen Bell, had this to say.

Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Tapped for $20 Million California Tax Credit

Sherlock Holmes 3,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, has been selected by the California Film Commission to receive a conditional $20.8 million tax credit for shooting in California.

Other feature films announced Monday include a Warner Bros. remake of “Little Shop of Horrors” with a $9.6 million credit; Will Smith’s “King Richard” with a $7.5 million credit for Warner Bros.; Universal’s “Purge 5” with $6.4 million; Atlas Entertainment’s “Janis” with $2.5 million; “American Pie Presents: Girls Rule” with $1.1 million; and four other projects with a $2.5 million credit — “Cherry,” “Macbeth,” “Pandora” and “Untitled Atomic Monster Film.”

The commission said the 10 projects will generate an estimated $310 million in qualified spending (defined as below-the-line wages and payments to in-state vendors). The “Sherlock Holmes” project alone will generate an estimated $106.8 million in qualified expenditures — the second highest project spending to date for Program 2.0 behind the $118 million in qualified expenditures for “Captain Marvel.”

As part of California’s expanded Film & TV Tax Credit Program, Warner Bros.’ “Sherlock Holmes 3” is among the films granted a tax credit for filming in California, with the third in the Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law franchise to receive a $20.8 million break.

On Monday, the California Film Commission announced 10 feature films that have been approved conditionally for tax credits under the state’s Film & TV Tax Credit Program 2.0. Other film on the list include “King Richard” starring Will Smith, a “Little Shop of Horrors” remake and “Purge 5.”

Jonathan Groff is, suddenly, Seymour with this fall’s Off Broadway return of the beloved Howard Ashman-Alan Menken musical Little Shop of Horrors. Co-starring with Mindhunter‘s Groff in the Michael Mayer-directed revival will be Tammy Blanchard and Christian Borle.

The production and casting was announced today by producers Tom Kirdahy, Robert Ahrens, Hunter Arnold, Mickey Liddell, Curt Cronin and John Joseph. Previews begin Tuesday, September 17, at the Westside Theatre, with opening night set for Thursday, October 17.

Groff will play Seymour, the hapless, lovestruck florist who creates a monster when he starts feeding a voracious, people-eating and fast-growing plant. Blanchard will play his co-worker and love Audrey.

In today’s film news roundup, Paramount wins a Chris Hemsworth-Tiffany Haddish project, “Wallflower” gets bought, Valeria Cotto gets cast and Roger Corman receives an honor.

Acquisitions

Paramount Pictures has bought worldwide rights to “Down Under Cover,” a buddy comedy starring Chris Hemsworth and Tiffany Haddish in a deal worth an estimated $40 million.

Paramount came out on top of the auction conducted by CAA and Filmnation at the Cannes Film Festival. Lionsgate, Sony, Netflix, Miramax and Stx were also in the running.

Producers include Hemsworth and Haddish along with “Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo and Mike Larocca, and Thematic Entertainment partners John Finemore, James Hoppe and Ben Grayson.

Hemsworth will play a detective who goes undercover to crack a series of casino heists in which the suspects are a troupe of Australian male erotic dancers. Haddish will portray his partner. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
