George Lucas fired his friend and producer of the previous two Star Wars movies, Gary Kurtz, before production began (although some sources say he simply quit on his own). Their relationship had deteriorated during the making of Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980), when the movie went wildly over budget and fell behind schedule. With Lucas self-funding both movies as independent productions, he opted to part company with Kurtz in favor of taking on active executive producer duties himself to ensure that this movie stayed under budget. The film was dubbed into Hungarian three times:
The first dub was made sometime between 1992 and 1993. This version is infamous for its odd terminology changes compared to the other Star Wars dubs. Droids are referred to as "androids", the Millennium Falcon became "Millenary Falcon", the word lightsaber was translated literally (other dubs used "lightsword" instead), and the Rancor was given the name "Monstrosaurus". Certain classic voice actors were introduced here: Vader's voice actor, Lajos Kránitz, would return for the third dub, as well as the third dub of Empire and later Frigyes Hollósi. János Csernák, the main voice actor of Harrison Ford began dubbing Han, and the Emperor's voice actor, Hugó Gruber would later voice Palpatine in the Prequel Trilogy. In this dub, the Emperor doesn't scream as he falls to his doom.
The second dub was made for the 1995 VHS release, with mostly consistent voices across all three films of the trilogy. According to the dubbing supervisor, Luke's new voice actor András Stohl gave such a good performance that he was asked to deliberately "act bad" to match Mark Hamill's on-screen acting. The Rancor is called "az Ádáz" ("The Fierce") in this and the following dub. Strangely, the Emperor's original voice actor returned in the role of Admiral Ackbar.
The third dub, created for 1997's Special Edition kept most of the "standardized" 1995 voice cast, except for Vader who is voiced by the same actor as in the original dub.
The 2011 Blu-ray brought back Vader's 1995 voice, Frigyes Hollósi for the newly inserted "Nooo!" line, as his Lajos Kránitz had passed away in 2005.
I'm sick of people whining about Ewoks! True, they're not the best thing that ever happened to Star Wars, but they DID happen, so deal with it! Besides, they ARE cute, and I don't care if they're marketable. Yubb Nubb!
This movie always leaves me in tears. It's perfect. The end could not be better. I'm excited for The Phantom Menace because it will suddenly throw the focus of the whole story from Luke to Anakin. I love how he is revealed at the end - it would be too unresolved any other way. So those of you who are complaining that Vader's helmet was removed, take a moment to think about it. It's very effective. Vader, the man who hid behind a mask for 20 years, is finally revealed as a sick-looking man. He is not entirely machine - he's vulnerable.
I don't know how the casting director happened to pick such good actors in A New Hope. They all do so well. They are believable characters. Hamill does an excellent job with his dramatic character development. Fisher does a fine job being a female role model (I mean, come on! She killed Jabba even when so many others had failed!). Harrison Ford - need I say more?
The music is once again brilliant. It's so very touching and significant when you can pick out character themes at different parts of the movie. The best climax is when Luke shouts "NOOO!" and jumps out to fight his father in the Final Battle. John Williams is nothing short of a genius! What an amazing man!
Already, the movie has so much more meaning for me because of Episode I. I can't wait to finally see it in the theatres (CAN I WAIT???) and then watch the original trilogy yet again.
