Even though this film was marketed as a prequel, It is often debated whether or not the film is actually a prequel or sequel to The Amityville Horror (1979), as the depicted family massacre contradicts the opening of the first film, as the family is awake and chased around the house by a possessed Sonny with the bodies removed in the morning when it is well known that the family was murdered in their sleep with the bodies removed in the middle of the night. The events of the first film and George Lutz and Kathy Lutz are also mentioned in the film's tagline as having been preceded by this film despite being full of elements that are clearly from the 1980s, such as a miniature "Walkman" radio/headphone set and the presence of 1982 cars, televisions, etc. Technically speaking, this is an unrelated standalone film that just happens to be based on an earlier part of the infamous story of Amityville while simultaneously being placed in present day, while having II in the title for some reason. AMITYVILLE 2: THE POSSESSION is one of the few horror movies sequels that is actually better than its predesessor. The movie is about an Italian-American family that moves into a house built on an ancient Indian burial ground. If you are a fan of THE SIMPSONS, you may remember a Treehouse Of Horror episode which spoofs this, but anyway, the movie is one of Burt Young's best and it is a truly horrifying, if not cheesy masterpiece. Recommended.
