Storyline

This is the story of "The Forty-Seven Ronin." Based on historical events in 1701 -- 1702, the movie tells the tale of the Asano clan's downfall and the revenge of its former samurai on the perpetrator of the catastrophe. Lord Asano was goaded, or tricked, into drawing his sword inside the Shogun's palace -- a crime which carried the death penalty. The newly installed Shogun was furious at Asano and ordered all his clan's assets seized, meaning some 20,000 samurai and commoners were unemployed and landless at a stroke. Forty-seven of these ronin (masterless samurai) banded together to take revenge on Lord Kira, who had goaded Asano into drawing his sword. They bide their time for a year and a half. Disguising their intentions, they lead public lives of drunken dissipation, while planning in secret. They finally succeed in exacting their revenge against powerful odds, and then commit ritual suicide to atone for breaking the law. They are buried at the temple of Sengaku-ji in Tokyo. ...

The movie subtitles state the events began in 1702. In fact Asano's crime took place on April 21, 1701. The revenge on Kira took place on January 30, 1703, not on December 14, 1702. The samurai committed seppuku on March 30, 1703, not on February 4, 1704. All these errors result from wrong conversion of Japanese dates to Gregorian calendar. See more »

Simplified Chushingura
19 November 2007 | by ace-150See all my reviews

Since the 1962 "Chushingura - Hana no maki yuki no maki" is one of my favorite films, I was expecting this to compare unfavorably, but I really enjoyed it. Keeping the focus on Oishi gives a really different flavor than the true ensemble structure of Chushingura. I think that reducing the number of major characters makes it a little easier to understand, but if you didn't grow up hearing the story, it's going to be a bit confusing. How fantastic would it be if there were a separate film telling the story from the perspective of each of the 47 ronin? It's quite beautifully filmed and makes good use of color to set the mood, particularly with the white funerary costumes at the end. I actually liked the 70's wawa music at the beginning, partly because it made me think of Lone Wolf and Cub.
