Maid Marian is represented in the cast as the daughter of Old Merwyn and it is at his house that the action begins. He introduces a rich gentleman as her prospective husband after displaying jewelry which the formal suitor has sent ahead with his declaration of love. Friar Tuck appears under the pretense of asking for alms and warns Marian that Robin is waiting at their meeting place. She manages to escape during a parley between her father and her future husband, Guy de Gisbourne, and keeps her appointment. She is discovered, however, and her angry father, backed up by the unheroic Guy, protests valiantly against the clandestine love-making, but formidable Robin is only amused. The bold outlaw is so careless about his personal safety that he eventually falls into an ambush prepared by Guy de Gisbourne, is captured and is bound to a tree while they set off in search of the Sheriff of Nottingham to obtain a formal warrant for Robin Hood's arrest. Marian hurries to where Little John is ... Written by Moving Picture World synopsis

Historically interesting, but hard to follow
10 April 2005 | by moviegeek-2See all my reviews

Sadly, some parts of this film have been lost. The print I saw, a newly restored version, was still missing quite a few parts of the first few scenes. As such, the viewer is pretty much thrown into the middle of the story.

Even knowing the Robin Hood legends, this is hard to follow. The story-boards do little to tell you what is going on; mostly limited to "Back at the Castle" rather than actual dialogue. Overall, enjoyable as a movie geek to see an early Robin Hood, but it pales compared to later versions. See only if you are already familiar with the story; otherwise you'll have no idea what is going on.

The version I saw was restored by the Fort Lee Film Commision. I don't know if there are other prints available.
