Lynn Charter and Laura Bray are very much in love with each other. Lynn goes to New York City to engage in business. During his absence Laura meets Hammond Gowan, a wealthy man, and marries him for his money. They move to New York. Not long after their marriage, Gowan becomes very cold and abusive. Hammond Gowan has discharged one of his workmen. The poor fellow appeals to Mrs. Gowan and she promises to intercede for his reinstatement. Her intercession leads to the usual quarrel and she unconsciously and nervously handles a paper cutter, laying on the table, which she raises as if to defend herself when he attempts to strike her. The maid enters the room and sees the paper cutter in her hand. The workman returns to his home, encouraged by Mrs. Gowan's promise, only to be driven to desperation by the death of his wife from starvation, and his children crying for food.
