Due to a police strike, Getraer asks Ponch and Jon to work in Palma Vista. There they meet a beautiful female race car driver, Candi Wright. She finds a traumatized little girl at a fire who won't tell them who she is or where she's from.
The new watch commander visits Central and begins hassling everyone for violating minor regulations. Even Getraer does not agree with the reprimands. The CHP is looking for thieves stealing trucks from loading docks.
Ponch and Jon are after jewelry thieves who use stolen motorcycles for quick getaways. The CHP holds a fun fair for kids in physical therapy. Ponch attempts to befriend a girl paralyzed after the thief hit her bicycle.
The Christmas season doesn't mean any less work for Jon and Ponch. At the community church, thieves run off with a 15th century bell that means a great deal to the local kids. The thieves also operate a car-theft ring and prey on unsuspecting car sellers by taking the cars for a test drive and not returning. When the criminals get into an auto accident, their strange behavior gives them away and they are arrested.
Ponch signs himself and Jon up for an EMT class at UCLA thinking they would get overtime pay and less time on the freeway. He was wrong. Plus their teacher is a fireman whom they angered that same morning by giving him a ticket.
Ponch and Jon try to keep both a dangerous drunk driver and a habitual reckless driver off the streets. A gas main breaks at the hospital. Central takes in an entire maternity ward until the babies can be transported.
Barizca's father, a crop duster, is being threatened by someone who believes the chemicals he is using are dangerous. When Barizca also learns that his father is not physically able to fly, he decides to take some time off to fill in for him. Jon tries to find the man threatening Barizca. He also tries to get the Barizcas to talk as Barry will have to make a choice if he will stay with the CHP or quit to work for his father full-time.
A criminal whom Getraer arrested is back and is terrorizing his family. At the same time a newly formed watch group tries to help by calling the cops when they come across a crime. But one of the members who lost a family member takes things too far.
When Getraer is injured he is brought to the hospital. While there and under sedation he sees someone do something to the man in the room with him. While trying to find out who the perpetrator is, the man tries to take Getraer out.
A family of con artists are operating in the area. Jon and Ponch meet the son of one of them before they knew of them. At the same time the mother of the son wants her husband to go straight but his brother won't let him.
The CHP is looking for a biker gang who goes around racing in the streets and who were also responsible for an accident. New CHP officer Steve McLeish thinks that the gang is trying to emulate something McLeish calls an Indy which is a motorcycle race. And it turns out his brother Toro's considered to be the best at it. And the leader is challenging him. And it turns out that his other brother, Ted hangs with the gang.
Thieves are planning a con job. Before the job takes place, they are in a hit and run crash with a friend of Sgt. Getrear's son, who is taken in by the Getrears. Jon investigates the crash and finds there is more involved than a crash.
Someone is committing robberies using a laser to blind anyone who stands in their way even cops. A former western star whom Jon idolizes was at the robbery and is hesitant to come forward because he did nothing.
A man who worked in an auto plant but was laid off when imported cars were preferred takes his frustrations out on all imported cars. Ponch has been working at the Special Olympics and the boy he's working with is sad that his father doesn't seem to show any interest. So Ponch goes to see him and when he says something hurtful, his son runs away. And a friend of Bobby's who's a motorcycle daredevil is about to try and dangerous stunt.
A robot is visiting the CHP to show that it could be helpful to their work and so far it does, but for some reason every time it goes near something electrical, it shorts out. Ponch is dealing with a couple of girls who go around on bikes and pursue anyone who is speeding. He suspects that one of them has a personal reason for what she is doing.
Ponch goes home to meet his girlfriend. But when he gets there, two men grab him and hold him at gun point. One of the men is someone he and Bobby busted now he wants to get back at both of them. So he tells Ponch to call Bobby to come over but Ponch refuses until his girlfriend arrives.
While trying to find some car thieves, the team gets a lead that takes them to a local high school. Ponch knows the shop teacher at the school, a car thief, whom he busted and who's on parole. Ponch goes to see him and asks him to keep his eyes open but the guy thinks that Ponch is singling him out. They send Bruce to the school, undercover and gets close to a girl who knows the ones they're looking for.
After Ponch is injured in a car chase, he is assigned to the Brat Patrol, an individualistic group of rag-tag kids who don't know what it means to be a team. Cadet Nelson and Officer Linahan investigate dope dealers in a neighborhood.
