Film News Roundup: ‘Apollo 13’ Set for Release on 50-Year Anniversary of Launch
In today’s film news roundup, “Apollo 13” gets a three-day re-release, “Calm With Horses” gets a home, and Malin Akerman’s action-comedy “Chick Fight” rounds out its cast.

Anniversary Release

Apollo 13” will be re-released to 600 North American theaters on April 5, 6 and 8, nearly 50 years after the liftoff of the ill-fated 1970 space mission.

Fathom Events, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment made the announcement Wednesday.

Apollo 13” starred Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan. The film, directed by Ron Howard, received nine Academy Award nominations and grossed $355 million worldwide.

The movie recounts the three astronauts dealing with the aftermath of an on-board explosion, reported with the line, “Houston, we have a problem.” With their spacecraft depleted of most of its oxygen supply and electrical power, they looped around the Moon with an improvised plan to returned to earth in the pre-digital age.

Nick Rowland’s Irish Crime Drama ‘Calm With Horses’ Acquired By Saban Films

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to Calm With Horses, the Irish crime drama from Nick Rowland in his feature film directing debut. The pic, which bowed at the Toronto Film Festival and is executive produced by Michael Fassbender and Conor McCaughan, stars Peaky Blinders alum Cosmo Jarvis, Barry Keoghan, Niamh Algar and Ned Dennehy.

The Joe Murtagh-penned script is set in darkest rural Ireland, where ex-boxer Douglas “Arm” Armstrong (Jarvis) has become the feared enforcer for the drug-dealing Devers family, while also trying to be a good father to his autistic 5-year-old son. Torn between these two families, Arm’s loyalties are tested when he is asked to kill for the first time.

Saban Films Lands Right To ‘Twist’ Starring Michael Caine & Lena Headey

Saban Films has secured the North American distribution rights to Martin Owen’s drama Twist, a modern take on Charles Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist. The pic, which was acquired out of Afm and will get a theatrical release Q1 of 2021, stars Oscar winner Michael Caine, Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey, recording artist and actress Rita Ora, Raff Law, and Sophie Simnett.

Written by John Wrathall, the plot is set in contemporary London and follows a gifted graffiti artist who is lured into a street gang headed by a father figure, Fagin, who plans a series of audacious art thefts.

Noel Clarke and Jason Maza produced the pic for Unstoppable along with Pure Grass Films’ Ben Grass and Knuckle Sandwich’s Matt Williams. Sky co-produced the project which was financed by Mep Capital, Blue Rider, Arclight Films and Lipsync Productions. Arclight is handling worldwide rights.

Michael Caine and Lena Headey’s Modern-Day ‘Oliver Twist’ Sells to Saban

Arclight Films has sold North American rights for “Twist,” a modern-retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic “Oliver Twist,” to Saban Films.

The updated version — starring Michael Caine and Lena Headey — was directed by Martin Owen and written by John Wrathall. The cast also includes Rita Ora, Raff Law and Sophie Simnett.

Saban Films plans to release the film theatrically in early 2021. Set in contemporary London, “Twist” follows a gifted graffiti artist who is lured into a street gang headed by a father figure named Fagin (Caine), who plans a series of audacious art thefts. Saban Films has picked up North American rights from Arclight Films to Martin Owen’s Charles Dickens adaptation Twist starring Michael Caine and Lena Headey in a deal that comes out of the recent Afm.

John Wrathall wrote the modern take on Dickens’ Oliver Twist and the film also stars Rita Ora, Raff Law (Repo Men), and Sophie Simnett.

Noel Clarke and Jason Maza produced Twist for Unstoppable alongside Ben Grass of Pure Grass Films, and Knuckle Sandwich’s Matt Williams. Sky served as co-producer, and financiers include Mep Capital, Blue Rider, Arclight, and Lipsync Productions.

“When I got to about page 10 of the script and there was this scene where my character Miles with his new gun attachment hands has to work out and try to go to the bathroom. Saban Films has nabbed U.S. rights to Nicol Paone’s feature directing debut Friendsgiving, the ensemble comedy starring Malin Akerman (Rampage), Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls) and Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

Film follows a glamorous, newly divorced actor, and her recently-dumped lesbian best friend. Together, along with their motley crew of close friends and strange acquaintances, they host a dysfunctional, comical and chaotic Thanksgiving dinner.
