‘Dark Phoenix’ Fires Up $5 Million at Thursday Box Office
Dark Phoenix,” the X-Men sequel from Disney and Fox, has earned $5 million in its Thursday box office previews, while “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which is projected similarly this weekend, earned $2.3 million in its previews from 3,250 screens with showings beginning at 6 p.m.

Dark Phoenix” is Disney’s first major tentpole release following the acquisition of the Fox slate, and it’s the final film with the current cast of X-Men characters before becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio is projecting an opening between $40-50 million for “Dark Phoenix,” with independent trackers saying it could go as high as $55 million in what is expected to be a close race for the top spot against “Secret Life of Pets 2.”

A $55 million opening for “Dark Phoenix” would be just above the series low opening of the previous installment, 2016’s “X-Men: Apocalypse.” That film made $53 million in its opening

‘The Secret Life of Pets 2′: Same Ol’ Dogs, No New Tricks

‘The Secret Life of Pets 2′: Same Ol’ Dogs, No New Tricks
Sad to say, the bloom is off the rose. The first The Secret Life of Pets in 2016 was an animated fluff-ball that hit on a fresh premise: What do our pets do when we close the door and leave them behind? The sequel covers pretty much the same territory. The big difference being that the critters leave New York City for a trip to the farm. Their instinct for mischief stays the same, yet you feel the pall of repetition. Not enough to completely spoil the party, but you get the idea.

‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’ Review: Enjoyable Fluff Better Suited for Television

Illumination missed the boat on The Secret Life of Pets because the way they’ve told these stories thus far make them a lot more conducive to television than cinema. If that first film’s sprawling character list devolving into wild schemes and pratfalls barely adhering to the flimsy plot beneath wasn’t enough to prove it, composing The Secret Life of Pets 2 into three very disparate subplots forced together at the climax is. Moving to a long-form narrative format would supply breathing room to focus on one or two animals at a time while the others exist tangentially in the background until their episode arrives. We could follow Max (Patton Oswalt replacing persona non grata Louis C.K.) and Duke (Eric Stonestreet) one week and Gidget (Jenny Slate) the next.

You wouldn’t have to pretend everyone’s motivations align in contrived and often ludicrous ways simply because each

“The Secret Life Of Pets 2” Shortchanges Our Furry Friends

There’s an unfortunate imbalance to be found within The Secret Life of Pets 2. Last time, the ingenious concept of what our animal companions do when we’re not around was done to decent effect, creating an animal take on the Toy Story plot. Nothing on the level of Pixar, but still cute and fun. Here, the scales are tilted in the wrong direction. Far too much of this film, which admittedly is aimed at children, opts to be silly nonsense just meant to divert young eyes. The potential of the first movie is mostly abandoned. One aspect here is handled well, but the rest is disappointing and trying for an adult to sit through. Consider me very much let down. The film is a sequel, of course, to The Secret Life of Pets. Again, we follow along with the adventures of various animals while their owners are out and about.

Harrison Ford Talks ‘Indiana Jones’ Reboot, Visiting Disney’s ‘Star Wars’ Land

  • Variety
Han Solo has a good feeling about Disneyland’s Millennium Falcon.

Harrison Ford, who visited the park’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attraction for its grand opening last week, summed up the addition — which includes an immersive ride based on Solo’s trusty spaceship — in one word: “incredible.” The actor shared his thoughts on the Falcon with Variety at Sunday’s premiere of “The Secret Life of Pets 2” at Westwood’s Fox Theatre.

“I think it works better than the one we used to use for the movies,” he joked.

Ford also discussed the upcoming reboot of another of his hit franchises, “Indiana Jones.” According to Indy himself, the much-anticipated Steven Spielberg film “should be starting to shoot sometime next week.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “Things are coming along well.”

The newest addition to Ford’s long list of franchise credits is Universal’s “The Secret Life of Pets.

Movie Review – The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)

The Secret Life of Pets 2, 2019.

Directed by Chris Renaud.

Featuring the voice talents of Patton Oswalt, Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll, Pete Holmes, Henry Lynch, Chris Renaud, and Harrison Ford.

Continuing the story of Max and his pet friends, following their secret lives after their owners leave them for work or school each day.

There’s very little to say about The Secret Life of Pets 2, which continues Illumination’s depressingly successful formula of pandering to the masses with generic humor and stories designed to keep antsy children sitting still for 90 minutes. It’s hyperactive, bland, listless, and squanders the few intriguing concepts it does bring to the table by burying them under subplots, it’s impossible to become invested. During the climactic chase sequence (which starts out in the most unoriginal depiction

Continuing the story of Max and his pet friends, following their secret lives after their owners leave them for work or school each day.

Despite arguably proving to be the most anodyne offering from Illumination Entertainment to date, 2016’s The Secret Life of Pets succeeded to the tune of $875 million worldwide, ensuring that a sequel would be loaded onto the animation house’s ruthlessly efficient, mid-budget conveyor belt as soon as possible.

And so, we have The Secret Life of Pets 2, a sequel that’s certainly no worse than its predecessor, but also not much better, and basically just as forgettable.

The story begins with

Movie Review – The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019)

Max becomes overly concerned about a new addition to his pack, Gidget is given custody of an important toy and Snowball becomes a freedom fighter for animals everywhere.

Illumination Entertainment is known primarily as the studio the Minions built. But it also found a hit in 2016 with The Secret Life of Pets, sold as a sort of Toy Story for domesticated critters. The movie raked in the best part of $900m at the global box office, making a sequel absolutely inevitable. Three years later, the same pets that drove the first film to multiplex success are back, sans the voice of controversial leading man Louis Ck,

Film Review: ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’

  • Variety
Film Review: ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’
Illumination’s “The Secret Life Of Pets” films do something the “Despicable Me” studio’s other offerings have yet to accomplish: They allow younger audiences to explore their feelings about new life experiences in a silly, lighthearted way through the travails of adorable animated animals. Despite being an overly loud and caustic clone of “Toy Story,” the first feature showed its target market that it’s perfectly okay to be frustrated about a new sibling joining the family. It gave kids and parents the fundamental tools to work through their difficulties, all with a healthy dose of slapstick.

Director Chris Renaud’s followup, “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” similarly spotlights the trepidation surrounding the arrival of a child. Only now, Renaud and returning screenwriter Brian Lynch deliver a lesson for the parents in the audience. Even though it poaches some themes and narrative structure from yet another Pixar classic
