‘Are You Afraid of the Dark’ Revival Gets a Premiere Date – Meet the New Midnight Society (Video)

Nickelodeon formally introduced its new Midnight Society from the upcoming “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” revival, and find themselves in the middle of their own scary story.

The three-episode revival follows an entirely new group of kids who tell a terrifying tale about the Carnival of Doom, only to have the events of the story come to life. It will air over three consecutive Fridays — not the original show’s Saturday night timeslot — beginning on Oct. 11.

In today’s TV news roundup, Amazon Prime Video releases the official trailer for “Modern Love,” and Discovery Channel Family will air the 90-minute series finale of “My Little Pony” on Oct. 12.

New York Comic Con: Watchmen Debut, Angel Reunion and More TV Events

TV fans attending New York Comic Con this fall will get to enjoy several treats, most notably a screening of HBO’s highly anticipated Watchmen adaptation.

Nickelodeon is getting dark.

The kids network released the first teaser for its upcoming revival of the classic ’90s series “Are You Afraid of the Dark,” and the new version looks a fright more more sinister than the original. The teaser, which you can watch above, shows a new batch of kids gathered around a campfire, submitting fresh scary stories for the approval of the Midnight Society.

The trailer features ominous music and more soundbites of screaming than we ever expected to hear on the channel that brought us “Spongebob,” “Zoey 101,” and almost every other beloved kids show. Then it asks the time-worn question anew: “Are you afraid of the dark?”

Deadline is reporting that Nickelodeon has assembled its new Midnight Society for the upcoming limited series revival of the classic children’s horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?.

According to the trade, Sam Ashe Arnold (Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.), Miya Cech (Rim of the World), Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl), and Jeremy Taylor (It), Lyliana Wray (Top Gun: Maverick) will portray the new Midnight Society, a group of kids who tell a terrifying tale about the Carnival of Doom, only for the story to come to life. Rafael Casal (Blindspotting) is also on board to star as Mr. Tophat, the ringmaster of the carnival.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is being directed by Dean Israelite (Power Rangers) from a script by BenDavid Grabinski (Skiptrace) and is expected to premiere in time for Halloween this October.

The reimagining of the anthology series “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” is coming together at Nickelodeon.

The new limited series, which will consist of three hour-long episodes, will premiere this October and introduce a new Midnight Society group of kids who will tell the terrifying tale of the Carnival of Doom, only to have the events of the story come to life.

“Are You Afraid of the Dark?” was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel and ran as an anthology series on Nickelodeon between 1992 and 1996. It was set around a group of teenagers who called themselves the Midnight Society and would meet weekly at a secret location in the woods to tell a scary story. The show was revived in 1999 for two more seasons with new writers and showrunners.

The new members of the Midnight Society are: Gavin, played by Sam Ashe Arnold (“Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.”); Akiko, played by Miya Cech; Louise, played by Tamara Smart; Graham, played by Jeremy Taylor; and Rachel, played by Lyliana Wray. The Carnival of Doom’s ringmaster, Mr. Tophat, is played by Rafael Casal (“Blindspotting”).

Production on the reimagined series begins this month in Vancouver, Canada.

When Nick first announced the project in February,it said the miniseries “will coincide with the upcoming ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ theatrical movie from Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players’ and Nickelodeon Movies, in theaters October 2019.”

Nickelodeon's classic horror anthology series, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, returns as a TV miniseries.

Sure, ‘90s kids are now adults, who, chances are, have binged the tech-driven, philosophically-based horror complexity of Netflix's Black Mirror. However, the gateway anthology horror show for many of that generation – besides Goosebumps – was Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?. Now Nickelodeon is bringing the series back as a three-part miniseries for a new generation of Midnight Society hopefuls.
