Biff Review: ‘Frances Ferguson’ is a Dryly Quirky, Provocative, and Muddled Comedy

We never meet the narrator (Nick Offerman) of Bob Byington’s film Frances Ferguson. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing or uncommon, but I couldn’t shake the idea that we should. It’s because he isn’t some omnisciently objective voice telling us a story. He interjects opinions, giggles, and often meanders to the point where his subject (Kaley Wheless’ Frances) must speak up to help him along. In one instance he mentions a “We” as though his (and another’s) entrance on-screen was imminent. It’s not. He means us, now … maybe. The film never acknowledges the weird duality of his presence as someone and no one simultaneously. It’s probably just a quirky choice for comedy within a dryly-quirky film I’m reading too much into, but it frustrated me without end.

This probably stems from my being frustrated right from the start as that glibly,

Paul Lieberstein’s ‘Song Of Back And Neck’ Lands At The Orchard; Abramorama Acquires Sundance Docu About M.I.A.

Rosemarie DeWitt, Brian D’Arcy James, Robert Pine, Clark Duke and Paul Feig co-star in the pic, which will get a 2018 release. Lieberman plays Fred, resigned to a lifetime of back pain who has tried every possible remedy — except for having an affair with a client (DeWitt) at the start of her complicated divorce, or trying her acupuncturist whose 200 needles in Fred’s back reveal a bizarre talent, or beginning to wonder if his problems are more psychological than physical. Lieberstein produces with Kim Leadford and StarStream Media’s Jennifer Prediger, and Fernando Loureiro, Roberto Vasconcellos, Candice Abela-Mikati, Allen Babakhanloo and Lauren Russell executive produce. Paul Lieberstein’s ‘Song of Back and Neck’ Bought by The Orchard
The Orchard has bought North American rights to Paul Lieberstein’s romantic comedy “Song of Back and Neck” for a release later this year.

The film, written and directed Lieberstein in his directorial debut, premiered in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. He stars in the film alongside Rosemarie DeWitt, Brian D’Arcy James, Robert Pine, Clark Duke, and Paul Feig.

Lieberstein plays a man who often collapses on the floor in back pain, and continues his day as usual, on the floor. He’s resigned to a life of pain, having tried every remedy possible and been told by a top surgeon (played by Feig) that there’s nothing to be done. But he hasn’t yet tried having an affair with a client (portrayed by DeWitt) at the start of her complicated divorce and he hasn’t yet begun to wonder if his problems are more psychological than physical.

‘Living Room Coffin’ VOD Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Jennifer Prediger, Blake Berris, Irene Roseen, Remy Bennett, Mark Boone Junior, Johnny Pemberton, Eden Riegel, Linas Phillips, Johnny Pemberton | Written and Directed by Michael Sarrow

Its no secret that I am nothing if not a sucker for what I call the “indie darling.” By this I mean the movies that sneak out under everyone’s radar and tend to revolve around a day in the life of our central characters, not a massive great deal is going on but we are suckered into spending an hour and a half with these people, usually due to well written dialogue and well rounded performances. Living Room Coffin, at first glance, looked like it would definitely be in that category – which made it a definite watch for me!

I am going to get into Living Room Coffin‘s story in a moment but first of all I want to highlight the performance of our female lead,

‘Uncle Kent 2’ Exclusive Posters: Check Out The Potential Sequels In the ‘Uncle Kent’ Franchise
In 2011, Joe Swanberg directed the film “Uncle Kent,” about 40-year-old stoner cartoonist Kent (Kent Osborne) who spends a weekend trying to sleep with visiting house guest Kate (Jennifer Prediger), a woman whom he met on Chatroulette. Despite few people actually seeing the film, Swanberg, Osborne and director Todd Rohal have created a sequel “Uncle Kent 2,” a meta-comedy about Kent trying to create a follow-up to the 2011 film by traveling to a comic-book convention and confronting the end of the world. Out of SXSW, Indiewire’s own Eric Kohn described it as “the craziest movie sequel ever” and said that it “provides the ultimate rebuke to formulaic storytelling.” Check out some exclusive posters for fictional sequels in the “Uncle Kent” universe.

Young love is always a flurry of excitement and terror, dominated by a wide-eyed sense of wonder and joy. But it can be difficult if two people aren’t on the same page, and even more difficult if two people are in the closet. The new film “First Girl I Loved,” which won the Next Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, follows Anne (Dylan Gelula), a high school senior and yearbook volunteer who falls in love with Sasha (Brianna Hildebrand), the most popular girl at her high school. The film also stars Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”), Tim Heidecker (“Tim & Eric”), Cameron Esposito (“Take My Wife”), Erik Griffin (“Workaholics”), and Jennifer Prediger (“Apartment Troubles”). ’Uncle Kent 2’ Trailer: Joe Swanberg Directs the First Twelve Minutes of This Sequel

’Uncle Kent 2’ Trailer: Joe Swanberg Directs the First Twelve Minutes of This Sequel
Is “Uncle Kent 2” the craziest movie sequel ever? That’s what our own Eric Kohn wrote of the film when it debuted at SXSW back in 2015, and going off even the most basic of synopses, it sure sounds like the Todd Rohal feature might rank right up there with the big guys.

Wait, a Todd Rohal feature? But didn’t Joe Swanberg direct “Uncle Kent”? What sort of madness is this? It’s “Uncle Kent” madness. Swanberg does direct the first 12 minutes of the film, before passing it over to “Catechism Cataclysm” director Rohal, who takes things very much in his own direction. See? Wild.

Sundance Film Festival 2016 Midnight and Competition Movie Lineup

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.

The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

Sundance ’16: Tim Sutton, Nicolas Pesce, Bernardo Britto, Matt Johnson & Anna Rose Holmer Break into Next section

We might look back to 2015’s 10 film line-up as a true vintage year for the Next section. With the likes of Rick Alverson’s Entertainment, Sebastián Silva’s Nasty Baby, Matt Sobel’s Take Me to the River, Sean Baker’s Tangerine and section winner Josh Mond’s James White, we’d be hard pressed to say that this year’s 10 selected film selection is a better crop, but so far with names such as Tim Sutton and his super secretive third film (Dark Night – see pic above), video helmer we adore in Nicolas Pesce’s debut (The Eyes of My Mother), short film Yearbook fest winner Bernardo Britto’s first (Jacqueline Argentine), big Slamdance home run hitter with The DirtiesMatt Johnson (Operation Avalanche) and the Venice to Park City bound The Fits from Anna Rose Holmer are all films we eagerly await. Here is the 10 section of what the fest calls “pure,
