Why Dirty Sci-Fi Is The Best Sci-Fi

This week Neil Calloway argues that one thing unites all the best science fiction…

Guardians of the Galaxy, the original Star Wars movies, Alien, and Firefly all have something in common. The obvious thing is that they’re all science fiction, but if I was just listing sci-fi surely I’d have included Star Trek, too. They’re all science fiction, but they’re also what I’d call “dirty space movies”.

You know a dirty space movie when you see it; everything is a little more battered in it, a little bit darker, the characters are a lot cooler and more likeable. Clean utopias might be nice fantasies, but how many times did you pretend to be characters from Star Trek when you were a kid compared to how many times you pretended to be Han Solo? The fact is, we prefer our science fiction darker, dirtier, the good

Following a six year hiatus, The Prodigy were revitalized in 2015 with the release of The Day Is My Enemy, a fourteen track outing that serves as the group’s latest full length effort to date. Taking to Twitter, The Prodigy have announced over the weekend that they’ll release new music in 2017. 10 Most Volatile & Aggressive Prodigy Songs

Youtube

After innovating the rave scene in the early 90’s, The Prodigy ventured into the unknown with the groundbreaking Fat Of The Land in ’97. The release marked a new beginning for the group with its very aggressive stance and heavy sonic bombs permeating the landmark album, helping to create an aggressive and violent streak not heard before in the genre.

One of the most understated facets of the band is their incorporation of rock music styles combined with the more obvious electronic direction that the band are most known for, giving them a harder edge that to this day still hasn’t been matched. Acts like Pendulum, Pitchshifter, Chase & Status etc, have all attempted to evolve the genre in the same fiery way but they lack the authentic innovation and seamless melding that made the Essex lot so unique.

Invaders Must Die was a good album but it lacked the

'Mad Men' creator Matthew Weiner: 'I feel a sense of accomplishment'
Matthew Weiner has always been more comfortable talking about the past of “Mad Men” rather than letting anyone know anything about the future — even when that future is only seven episodes long, starting Sunday, April 5 at 10 p.m. Having spent enough time over the years asking Weiner questions that he responded to with a very guarded, “Well, you’ve got to watch,” I knew enough to focus as much on the past as possible when we recently sat down for an hour-long interview to discuss the end of his Emmy-winning baby. We talked about the last days of production, looked back all the way to the show’s origins when Weiner was a staff writer on “Becker” looking for a different kind of career in television, the show’s long acting Emmy drought, and more. And I made it almost to the end without a single “You’ve got to watch.

Iain Softley interview: Trap For Cinderella, Hackers & more

Feature Sarah Dobbs 12 Jul 2013 - 05:39

With his latest film, Trap For Cinderella, out in UK cinemas now, director Iain Softley talks about film locations, Hackers and more...

Iain Softley is a filmmaker who’s hard to categorise. His career is pretty fascinating, because it’s almost impossible to predict what kind of film he’ll make next. His first film was a drama about the early career of the Beatles, which he followed with an unconventional action movie about computer hackers. Then he made a period drama. Then a weird sci-fi movie set in a mental hospital. Then a spooky horror film, and followed it up with a fantasy movie for kids. How many directors can you name who’ve made a series of films that diverse?

His new film, Trap For Cinderella, is yet another different kind of movie, and maybe one of the most difficult to categorise

Glastonbury 2013: the best sets to watch online

From Nick Cave to Azealia Banks via Haim and the Arctic Monkeys, a round-up of this year's best performances, which are available to stream now

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

As the Rolling Stones' headline slot proved, Glastonbury's always been a safe bet for any band with a collective age of somewhere in the region of 900, but Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' swaggering, uncomfortably intense set made most of the younger bands seem curmudgeonly in comparison. The highlight of their performance arrives around the 52-minute mark when Nick Cave descends into the front of the crowd for Stagger Lee and shares an oddly moving moment with a young lady perched on someone's shoulders dressed all in white, with Cave roaring "I've come to take you down". She may or may not have been sacrificed afterwards. Click here to watch the video
