Kingdom Hearts: Why Mickey Mouse Only Had a Cameo in First Game

Matthew Byrd Jan 24, 2019

Disney placed severe restriction on Mickey Mouse's use in Kingdom Hearts.

The Kingdom Hearts series may be a beloved success, but there was a time when Square Enix had to convince Disney to let them work with so many beloved properties. While the pitch process was mostly smooth, Disney did place one major limitation on Mickey Mouse.

"Actually, due to contractual issues, we were only able to use him in one scene," said Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura in the Kingdom Hearts Ultimania book. "Disney gave us permission for a role such as waving from the back of a crowd of people in town, but if we were going to use him, I thought we should use him in a single shot to leave the greatest impression."

The shot that Nomura is referring to happens near the very end of Kingdom Hearts. It is then that

When a game has taken a long time to release, a common joke amongst the gaming community is that, "It isn't a game at all, just a series of trailers.".  In the case of Kingdom Hearts III, that joke has been made at nauseum.  Unfortunately, until January 29th of next year, that joke will continue.  Especially since Square Enix isn't finished releasing content for 2018.  In a new post on the official Kingdom Hearts page, Tetsuya Nomura, Kingdom Hearts Director, Writer, and Artist, revealed two dates in December when new Kingdom Hearts content will drop.

It's exciting to see that there is more on the way, but with all due respect to Mr. Nomura, he really shouldn't feel bad.  At this point, we've watched countless of trailers, seen tons of new worlds and characters,

‘Kingdom Hearts’ Tetsuya Nomura Worked Hard to Bring You Those Pixar Levels
It’s been five years since Square Enix and game director Tetsuya Nomura announced “Kingdom Hearts 3.” While the man behind the blend of Square Enix and Disney magic says his perspective on the game hasn’t wavered, he’s also been one step ahead of players since the beginning.

While Nomura didn’t have the entire series planned out, he was always looking ahead to the next chapter in what has become a sprawling saga. So while he didn’t necessarily know where the path would lead Sora, Riku, and friends at the start, he’s always planning.

“When I was developing ‘Kingdom Hearts 1’, I already had in mind what I wanted to do with the next titles, ‘Chain of Memories’ and ‘Kingdom Hearts 2′” Nomura says. “While we were in development of ‘Chain of Memories’ and ‘Kingdom Hearts 2,’ I was already thinking of story lines for ‘Coded,’ ‘358/2 Days,’ and ‘Birth by Sleep.

‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ Delivers Lush Graphics, Pixar Quality

  • Variety
“Kingdom Hearts III” is a meaningful evolution of a nearly 16-year-old franchise that manages to not only absorb the best bits of the 15 games that came before it, but also enrich them with refined graphics and the addition of Pixar to the Disney-Square-Enix mash-up.

The game, which still doesn’t have a release date beyond sometime in 2018, was shown off to a gathering of press on Thursday evening in Santa Monica. Those in attendance were given the game, playing through a boss fight in Hercules World and then playing through nearly a third of the Toy Story World levels.

Before starting the hands-on play sessions, Shinji Hashimoto, executive producer of the series, welcomed everyone and then kicked off a panel discussion about the game with community manager Sunil Godhania and “Kingdom Hearts III” co-directors Tetsuya Nomura and Tai Yasue.

The talk confirmed that “Kingdom Heart III” will wrap up the

'Final Fantasy Versus Xiii' Will Have Controllable Mechs

With all of the recent talk of "Final Fantasy Xiii-2" and "Final Fantasy Type-0," you might be starting to worry that Square-Enix has forgotten about -- or worse, shelved -- the originally announced sibling game to 2009's "Final Fantasy Xiii," "Final Fantasy Versus Xiii." I'll give you a minute to sort through the ridiculous number of finals and fantasies referenced above. Now for the good news: "Versus Xiii" is still very much in development, as revealed in a new interview with the game's director and real-world hero of the series, Tetsuya Nomura.

The big thing Nomura touched upon in the interview was the game's battle system. He said that the menu items seen in a recently revealed trailer spell out to Magic, Item, Summon and Ex-arts.
