Toronto Correspondences #10: Get That Money

  • MUBI
The Notebook is covering Tiff with an on-going correspondence between critics Fernando F. Croce, Kelley Dong, and editor Daniel Kasman.Uncut GemsDear Kelley and Fern,When one is in the thick of a film festival, surrounded on all sides by movie after movie after movie, the caffeine jolt of coffee may not be enough to keep up your energy; you may need a film that throttles you. If you want to be grabbed by the throat, then I’ve got just the movie for you: Josh and Benny Safdie's Uncut Gems. Like the brothers’ last two features, Heaven Knows What (2014) and Good Time (2017), it’s a showboating immersion into a gritty but resiliently existent side of New York that is nowadays rarely set to film. And like Good Time, their collision of Robert Pattinson with a borough-based B-film, Uncut Gems is driven by the monomania of its protagonist, Harold Ratner,

Tiff Review: ‘Uncut Gems’ Finds the Safdies and Adam Sandler at the Top of Their Game

There are two consistently pervasive ideas in the films of New York filmmaking duo Josh and Benny Safdie. The first is their clear affection for the art and craft of hustling. From their autobiographical drama Daddy Longlegs to their verité junkie film Heaven Knows What there’s a reliable focus on the often thrilling process of social manipulation and coercion to point where stretches could briefly be mistaken for a con man film if it weren’t for how they never lose sight of how these actions intersect with economic class. For people on the margins of society it is not just a skill but a tool of survival, which is especially true in their moody and expressive 2017 feature Good Time which saw Robert Pattinson’s Connie spend an entire evening engaging in increasingly desperate transactional interactions all across New York in attempt to bail his brother out of prison.

‘Uncut Gems’ Film Review: Adam Sandler Is a Memorable Mess in Safdie Brothers’ Wild Ride
If you’re looking for cinematic tour guides to the road to ruin, you can’t do much better than Josh and Benny Safdie. The New York-based indie filmmaker brothers are masters of a certain type of adrenalized, immersive storytelling that puts us up close with characters whose default mode is desperation.

Two years ago, they rocked Cannes with the heist-gone-wrong thriller “Good Time,” starring a mesmerizing Robert Pattinson. And this year, they’ve hit Telluride and now Toronto with “Uncut Gems,” a blast-furnace character study starring Adam Sandler as a New York jewelry salesman with an unerring instinct for finding a way to screw up everything he touches.

After a brief prologue set in an Ethiopian mine, “Uncut Gems” delivers the most instructive trick shot imaginable: It opens on a rock containing opals that seem to shimmer with every color of the rainbow, with the camera plunging into the

Adam Sandler and ‘Uncut Gems’ Co-Stars on Working With the ‘Crazy’ Safdie Brothers

Adam Sandler and ‘Uncut Gems’ Co-Stars on Working With the ‘Crazy’ Safdie Brothers
Uncut Gems,” a dark comedy starring Adam Sandler and directed by the Safdie Brothers, is a wild ride that has generated awards season buzz since premiering at this year’s Telluride Film Festival.

In the film, Sandler portrays Howard Ratner, a jewelry dealer in New York’s Diamond district. He’s a gambling addict con-man who can’t seem to ever score the big swindle. He’s being chased by unsavory characters while navigating his Long Island family and his out-of-control existence in Manhattan.

Sandler, Josh and Ben Safdie, along with co-stars Lakeith Stanfield, Menzel, NBA champ Kevin Garnett and newcomer Julia Fox sat down Monday at the Toronto Film Festival, where the movie also screened, for a wide-ranging interview at the Variety Studio presented by AT&T.

To prepare for his role, Sandler said he shadowed real jewelry dealers from the Diamond District on 47th Street, where they shot on location during business hours.

Adam Sandler's New Movie Uncut Gems Scores Perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
Here's something many people maybe didn't expect to hear today: the new Adam Sandler movie has been met with some of the best reviews of the year. Indeed, Uncut Gems, which recently debuted at the Telluride Film Festival, has earned heaps of critical praise from those who were in attendance and that has equated to a flawless Rotten Tomatoes score for the upcoming flick. The great Sandler comeback is continuing, so it would seem.

While there are only seven official reviews counted, Uncut Gems, the latest from the Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, currently holds an unblemished 100 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Though, scrolling around online beyond Rt approved critics, it's quite clear that seemingly everyone who saw the movie has nothing but good things to say about it. Specifically, Adam Sandler's performance has earned high praise, and is even generating some early Oscar buzz. Variety's Chris Willman had this to say on Twitter.

Adam Sandler's Uncut Gems Has Opened to Rave Reviews at Telluride Film Festival, and Boasts a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Adam Sandler is mostly known for playing the ridiculous characters he has created in films like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, and many more. He steals our hearts in goofy rom-coms like 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer, and every now and then he shows off his totally deep and real acting chops, like in Punch-Drunk Love and Reign Over Me.

A Sandler film is more often ridiculous than not, but I enjoy his films more often than I don’t, especially the ones where we get to see him take a deeper dive into a character that has the depth to hold him. It looks as though we will be able to see just that in Sandler’s upcoming film, Uncut Gems.

The film opened this past weekend at the Telluride Film Festival to critical acclaim. The directors, Benny & Josh Safdie, are coming off the buzz of their 2017 indie favorite Good Time.

Telluride Film Review: Adam Sandler in ‘Uncut Gems’

Telluride Film Review: Adam Sandler in ‘Uncut Gems’
Audiences have been comparing Josh and Benny Safdie’s “Uncut Gems” to a cocaine rush since it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. I wouldn’t know, but it’s a trip all right: (Adam Sandler), which is not a place most moviegoers would care to spend much time. That’s because most moviegoers are looking for simple escapism, whereas “Uncut Gems” feels like being locked inside the pinwheeling brain of a lunatic for more than two hours — and guess what: It’s a gas!

Howie runs a by-appointment-only jewelry store in New York’s diamond district, a humming network of tiny stands and private showrooms where specialists handle the bulk of the city’s precious stones. It’s a traditionally Jewish enclave, and everyone there seems to know Howie, who’s well-liked but an obvious loose cannon: A reckless adulterer, an incorrigible gambling addict and a borderline con artist,

‘Uncut Gems’ Review: Adam Sandler Runs Wild in the Safdie Brothers’ Delirious Thriller

‘Uncut Gems’ Review: Adam Sandler Runs Wild in the Safdie Brothers’ Delirious Thriller
Adam Sandler has embodied many obnoxious, self-absorbed figures over the years, but with “Uncut Gems,” he plays the most contemptible character in a 30-year career. Directors Joshua and Benny Safdie’s followup to “Good Time” is on that same wavelength — abrasive, deranged, driven by an insuppressible blur of movement and noise. It’s also a riveting high-wire act, pairing cosmic visuals with the gritty energy of a dark psychological thriller and sudden bursts of frantic comedy, and it’s the first movie to truly commune with Sandler’s performative strengths since “Punch-Drunk Love.”

After all, it’s a Safdie brothers movie. Ever since 2008’s “The Pleasure of Being Robbed,” these sibling filmmakers have excelled at burrowing inside the mindset of combustible characters driven to destructive tendencies just to survive another day. The dysfunctional father of “Daddy Longlegs” may as well exist in the same restless universe as the furious junkies

Critics Savage John Travolta’s Career Rock-Bottom ‘The Fanatic’: It’s a Movie That Hates You

Critics Savage John Travolta’s Career Rock-Bottom ‘The Fanatic’: It’s a Movie That Hates You
From the mind of Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst comes “The Fanatic,” a movie starring John Travolta that reviewers are having a whale of a time eviscerating. In terms of Rotten Tomatoes scores, it is just about on par with Travolta’s last starring vehicle, “Gotti.” Which obviously makes this yet another can’t-miss car crash from the Scientologist who recently shaved his head at the behest of Pitbull and mistook drag artist Jade Jolie for Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards.

In a zero-star review from RogerEbert.com, Brian Tallerico writes, “‘The Fanatic’ hates fans. It hates actors. It hates tourists, shop owners, and servants. It really, really hates autistic people. And it hates you. It’s a movie that thinks you’re an idiot, someone who won’t see through its shallow provocations, illogical behavior, and vile misanthropy.”

The movie stars Travolta as an autistic man named Moose,

John Travolta Plays Off His Taylor Swift Vma Mix-Up as ‘A Good Day’

John Travolta Plays Off His Taylor Swift Vma Mix-Up as ‘A Good Day’
John Travolta presented Taylor Swift with the award for Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night, for her pro-Lgbtq video “You Need To Calm Down.” At least, that’s what was supposed to happen.

When Travolta and his co-presenter Queen Latifah announced Swift’s name, the Vma stage at the Prudential Center was rushed by not only Swift, but her entire coterie of “You Need To Calm Down” celebrity co-stars, including a slew of drag queens. One of them, Jade Jolie, happens to be a Taylor Swift impersonator.

John Travolta Explains Viral Taylor Swift VMAs Moment: "I Was Looking for Her"

John Travolta Explains Viral Taylor Swift VMAs Moment:
John Travolta once again made headlines for an awkward moment as a presenter at an awards show when he appeared to mistake Taylor Swift for drag queen Jade Jolie at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards.

The actor, who previously introduced Idina Menzel as "Adele Dazeem" during the 2014 Academy Awards, presented the video of the year award to Swift and the cast of her "You Need to Calm Down" music video. While the castmembers made their way up to the stage, Travolta appeared to try to hand the trophy to Jolie, who plays Swift in the music ...

Telluride’s 2019 Line-Up Includes Renée Zellweger, Adam Driver, Sterling K. Brown and More
Colorado’s San Juan Mountains will soon be alive with the sights and sounds of movies.

The line-up for the 46th Telluride Film Festival has been announced.

The starry slate includes the world premiere of “Judy,” director Rupert Goold’s biopic about the final months of Judy Garland’s life with Renée Zellweger in the title role. “Maybe because Renée hasn’t done a huge number of things in the past few years, she’s saved up all of her tenderness, all of that vulnerability to bring to this role,” Telluride co-director Julie Huntsinger told Variety.

“Judy” is certainly not the only world premiere during this year’s festivities, which run from Friday, Aug. 30 to Monday, Sept. 2. James Mangold’s real-life car racing drama “Ford v Ferrari” starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale is on the bill. Edward Norton will premiere his directorial debut “Motherless Brooklyn,” with an ensemble including Gugu Mbatha-Raw,
