Roy Barraclough obituary

Actor best known for playing Alec Gilroy, the pompous landlord of the Rovers Return in Coronation Street

The actor Roy Barraclough, who has died aged 81, forged a memorable TV partnership with the comedian Les Dawson as one half of the two old Lancashire gossips Cissie and Ada, before gaining his greatest fame as Alec Gilroy in Coronation Street. Actor and character were poles apart – Barraclough quiet and modest, Alec pompous, shifty and mean-spirited – but they shared a love of the theatrical that stemmed from childhood.

Alec was first seen in the serial in 1972 as steward of the New Victoria working men’s club, where Rita Littlewood (played by Barbara Knox) sang. Three years later, he was back running a theatrical agency that managed Rita, the piano accompanist Ernest Bishop (Stephen Hancock) and some more bizarre acts.

Pobol y Cwm at 40: Welsh-language TV has never been stronger

Thanks to the popularity of Nordic noir, viewers are more lingually liberal than ever before, which opens up a world of possibilities for the future of Welsh drama

Though few may recognise his name, Gareth Lewis is the seventh longest-serving actor in a continuous role in British television history, with 38 years service behind him. This puts him up there with William Roache, Barbara Knox and Anne Kirkbride, but Lewis is not in Coronation Street. He plays put-upon local business mogul Meic Pierce in Pobol y Cwm (People of the Valley), the Welsh-language soap that celebrates its 40th anniversary on 16 October. Fair play to him, you might say.

Produced by BBC Wales since 1974 and set in the fictional one-estate-agent-village Cwmderi, it is a full nine years older than its BBC cousin EastEnders. Recent intrigues have included the illegal use of red diesel, a co-operative scheme to buy the pub and the theft of a ram.
