Crown and Anchor Movie Review: A Dark, Biting Look at Family and Abuse

Family can lift you up, or they can drag you down.

In the case of Jimmy Downey, his family filled with abuse and crime threatened to pull him under so far he escaped leaving them far behind.

But when Jimmy's beloved mother, Rose, dies, Jimmy heads back to his hometown to face a lifetime of disillusion and disappointment that he was never able to escape no matter how much distance he set.

Michael Rowe, best known by TV Fanatics as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot on Arrow, stars as Jimmy, a police officer brimming with loneliness and unreleased anger.

His escape from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Toronto didn't heal his wounds after watching his father brutalize his mother for years, nor did it ease his pain at walking away and leaving his family to their own devices even if Jimmy was trying to be a better man.

We're only briefly treated to

Ghost Light Review: Good, Clean Fun for the Theater Crowd

The Haunted Comedy is a genre that probably reached its height in the 1940s with movies like Abbott and Costello's Hold that Ghost.

There was another wave of them during the 1980s with Haunted Honeymoon starring Gene Wilder and  Gilda Radner, and High Spirits with Steve Guttenberg and Daryl Hannah.

To be clear, a haunted comedy is not the same as the horror comedies of the 90s like the Scream spoofs of the Scary Movie franchise.

Ghost Light is a comedy first, and one that deals with the goofy antics of the theater crowd.

Tempting Fate Review: Mistakes Were Made!

It's through their idiosyncracies and superstitions that the haunting gets explored.

If you didn't know, one of those superstitions is that the play, Macbeth, is cursed. You can't say the title lest the entire production get cursed.

Quoting lines before the production is also verboten, especially when noting the witches incantations.

Funny Story Review: Poignant Drama Showcases Emily Bett Rickards and Matthew Glave

We shared the trailer for Funny Story earlier this month.

Starring Matthew Glave, Jana Winternitz, and Emily Bett Rickards, the film follows Walter, an aging TV star, and his relationship with women, most especially with is sometimes-estranged daughter, Nic (Winternitz).

When Nic cancels on a weekend visit, Walter invites himself along with her and her friends on a weekend in Big Sur.

Rickards is Kim, a young woman suffering after the death of her mother whose car kicks the bucket after attending her mother's funeral, a situation that jeopardizes her attendance at the Big Sur get together.

Nic's simple request of her father to give Kim a ride sets into motion the central conflict of the movie and explores how honest someone should be with the people they love.

The former star of a show with questionable production values but a wide audience, Walter is magnanimous, loving, and the kind

‘Funny Story’ Trailer: Lesbian Comedy Follows Dad and Daughter Love Triangle
What happens when an aging heartthrob accidentally sleeps with his daughter’s new girlfriend the day before officially meeting her? That’s the premise of “Funny Story,” a new comedy from Maker Studios co-founder Michael Gallagher. It sounds like a bit of a problematic premise, but also a potentially hilarious one. An exclusive new trailer shows that “Funny Story” could offer a fresh take on the love triangle rom-com, with an added queer twist.

The official synopsis reads: “Walter Campbell (Matthew Glave) is an aging heartthrob struggling to keep up appearances— especially with his estranged adult daughter, Nic (Jana Winternitz). In an attempt to reconnect with his family, he invites himself to crash her vacation in Big Sur. ‘Better Things’ Review: Season 3 Is Better Than Anything You Want to Compare It To

‘Better Things’ Review: Season 3 Is Better Than Anything You Want to Compare It To
Just when you think, “Oh, this is the through-line for Season 3,” Pamela Adlon takes “Better Things” in a whole new direction. Over the course of eight episodes, these standout moments slowly build into connections, the connections into loose themes, and the series into an endlessly watchable, yet utterly unquantifiable TV experience. In the end, there’s no one takeaway; there are dozens, and they’re delivered with the kind of beautiful storytelling that appears effortless, but actually requires acknowledgement on levels both granular and grand. “Better Things” is an unparalleled accomplishment, and a true original to boot.

Sam Fox (played by Adlon) starts the season by sending her oldest daughter, Max (Mikey Madison), to college in Chicago. The premise lends itself to expectations: an early fight reconciled in time for a sweet goodbye, with little comedic flourishes filling in the middle. Yet Adlon’s vignette structure ditches that formula early,

First Trailer for YouTube's Post-Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Film 'The Thinning'

"Are you ready for test day?" YouTube Red has unveiled the first trailer for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller titled The Thinning, from writer/director Michael J. Gallagher. Set in the future, the story focuses on a high school aptitude test that is used to manage the population. Two students, played by Logan Paul and Peyton List, discover the test isn't what it seems and may actually be covering up a bigger conspiracy. This sounds kind of like Logan's Run, but revised to a high school level "aptitude test". The full cast includes Lia Marie Johnson, Calum Worthy, Matthew Glave, Michael Traynor and Ryan Newman. This looks like a mix of Hunger Games and a bunch of other much better sci-fi, but that may be why it's direct to VOD. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael J.
