First Look Media’s Topic studio unveils scripted TV slate

Slate includes hour-long drama from Channing Tatum’s production company Free Association.

First Look Media’s Topic studio has unveiled its development slate for scripted TV series, with projects from Alex Garcia Lopez, Erin Foley-Chan and Channing Tatum’s production company Free Association.

Hunger, written by Garcia Lopez, is a geopolitical thriller about the powerful, covert and dangerous business of the global food industry. With nods to Traffic and The Night Manager, the hour-long series promises to be a provocative, uncompromising and international drama exposing an urgent and imminent crisis relatively unknown to the world.

Trying, written by Foley-Chan, is part of a first look deal with executive producer Daniel Powell. The half hour comedy follows Erin Foley-Chan, a chronic people-pleaser who can’t resist helping everyone around her. When told that she is infertile and cannot have a child without arduous treatments, she’s forced to deal with her own problems, for once.

Joe Corallo: Ben Kahn’s Heavenly Blues

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been highlighting some of the newer publishers, including Vault Comics, AfterShock Comics, and It’s Alive! Press.

This week I’m covering Scout Comics and Ben Kahn. Ben had self-published a comic titled Heavenly Blues which I had picked up a while back at Carmine Street Comics here in Manhattan. Since then, Scout Comics has picked up the series. I got the chance to talk with Ben about his comics career and having Heavenly Blues added to Scout Comics growing roster.

Jc: Thank you for taking the time to chat with me about your new series at Scout Comics, Heavenly Blues! Before we get started, you’re a fairly new face to comics, at least in terms of being Diamond distributed. Can you tell us a bit about your writing career leading up to this?

Bk: Of course. Heavenly Blues is my first series handled by Diamond,

Bryan Fischer professes his love for homosexuals, Fox inevitably exploits “What the Fox Said,” Zac Efron reportedly hit rehab five months ago

Monday night Johnny Weir spoke to Queerty and said that he had no intention of toning himself down for the Olympics in Sochi. “If I’m lucky enough to qualify for the Olympics, I will bring the usual Johnny Weir. I’m not going to tone myself down, but I won’t go over the top to make a statement. My statement, whether people feel it’s enough or not, is being there. The fact that I can be proud, strong and an Olympian? That’s a huge statement. And the Olympics are a thing I’ve worked my whole life for, and they’re something I respect so much. The sound of Mitchell and Webb's triumphant return to Radio 4

The comedy duo head back to the airwaves – just as Charlie Higson bemoans the lack of British sketch shows on TV and Adrian Edmondson loses interest in comedy altogether

This week's comedy news

David Mitchell and Robert Webb are to perform their first sketches in four years, when they return with a new series of their Radio 4 show That Mitchell and Webb Sound. The duo will be joined on the broadcasts by original cast member (and fellow Peep Show star) Olivia Colman.

Mitchell described it as "great to return to Radio 4, now that we're old enough to listen to it", while Radio 4 comedy commissioning editor Caroline Raphael said: "My parting words to David and Robert [when they moved to television] were 'the door is always open' – and here they are, back again, and we are absolutely delighted." The duo are also soon to appear in the BBC sitcom Our Men, about Britain's embassy in fictional Tazbekistan.

Good morning! And a thank you to Heather Hogan for doing the Brew while I was out.

Of course lesbians are part of a book about bad girls! Carol Dyhouse's Girl Trouble includes this tidbit:

....flappers were portrayed somewhat inconsistently as either man-hungry or boyish, vamps or lesbians. If they weren't preying on young men, they might be preying on young women.

Maybe they were just all bisexual. Split the difference!

Out author Nicola Griffith has compiled a list of her favorite lesbian sci-fi books.

Zanele Muholi's series of South African lesbian portraits is finally coming to the U.S.! "Faces and Phases" will be on display at New York City’s Yancey Richardson Gallery now through April 6.
