90s Video Action Stars Part IV – Gary Daniels, Joe Lara, C. Thomas Howell and Thomas Ian Griffith

Tom Jolliffe with the latest delve back to the video shelf with 90’s video action stars [read part one, part two and part three]…

With so many 90’s action icons worked through already, you’d imagine I was beginning to struggle for subjects to cover. You’d be mistaken. It feels like I’ve barely scratched the surface of 90’s ass-kick specialists. This only goes to show that slightly wistful post-century turn which saw new kids on the block becoming fewer and further between. Inevitably as big ‘actors’ moved in on the big screen action genre in the 90’s, the next decade would see some heavy hitters becoming Dtv action specialists themselves with the likes of Christian Slater, Cuba Gooding Jr and Val Kilmer becoming stalwarts, then beyond them even bigger stars fell into video land like Nicolas Cage, Bruce Willis and John Travolta. The desire for ass-kicking specialists and M.A tournament casting was largely a thing of the past.

  • Nerdly
Stars: Stu Bennett, Gary Daniels, Keith Allen, Sean Blowers, Anna Shaffer, Bryan Larkin, Sapphire Elia, Kevin Leslie, James Fisher, Mark Griffin, Orion Lee, Wayne Gordon, Fleur Keith, Alan Calton | Written and Directed by Ross Boyask

When ex-soldier turned mercenary, John Gold (Bennett), learns of the murder of his best friend, he sets off on a mission to find out what happened. What he discovers is a sinister conspiracy and he sets about taking down those responsible one by one.

Since parting ways with the WWE, former superstar Stu Bennett (aka Wade Barrett) has turned his hand to a career as a movie hard man. First as the villain in the fantastic Scott Adkins movie Eliminators and now here in Vengeance – where he takes on a more heroic role. Well I say hero, but it’s more in the sense of a vengeful, single-minded anti-hero in the grand revenge-seeking tradition of Charles Bronson.

Official Trailer for Action Film 'I Am Vengeance' Starring Stu Bennett

"You best stop shooting your mouth off, now – or you're a dead man!" Saban Films + Lionsgate have just released an official trailer for another one of these low budget, super cheesy, totally awful-looking action films. This one is titled I Am Vengeance, a variation on the original Vengeance title for UK release. I Am Vengeance stars former WWE wrestler Stu Bennett (who wrestled under the name Wade "King" Barrett) as an ex-Special Forces soldier turned professional mercenary, who goes to a small town to investigate the murder of a friend and his parents. The film's cast includes Keith Allen, Gary Daniels, Anna Shaffer, Bryan Larkin, Sean Blowers, Sapphire Elia, Mark Griffin, and Wayne Gordon. I'm so, so tired of these films, only about guns and muscles and bravado and being men and honor and glory and all that crap. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Ross Boyask's I Am Vengeance,

Terrible Trailer for Low Budget Sci-Fi Thriller 'Astro' Filmed in Roswell

"What would you do if your child was from another galaxy?" File this under "Don't Watch", which means you'll probably watch it any just to see how bad it is. An official trailer has debuted for an indie sci-fi feature titled Astro, and it looks terrible in every single way. The story is about some billionaire's space exploration program bringing back an alien from another planet, or something like that. The film's cast includes Gary Daniels, Marshal Hilton, Courtney Akbar, Max Wasa, Louis Mandylor, and Michael Paré. This trailer is a mess, the CGI is horrible, I don't even know what's going on. This site also describes it nicely: "A Bland Uninspired Sci-Fi Mess." Brian Steele Medina of Gemini Syndrome, composed the music and sound FX for the trailer, which also features the unreleased track "We Are the Fallen" written by the alternative metal band. The original score is composed by Erick Schroeder.

Sylvester Stallone teases The Expendables 4 return

Last April, it was announced that Sylvester Stallone had opted against a return as Barney Ross for The Expendables 4, exiting the all-star action franchise over creative differences with Millennium Films boss Avi Lerner.

Well, it seems that Sly may now have had a change of heart, with the star taking to Instagram to share an image of himself alongside co-stars Jason Statham and Randy Couture, complete with the caption: “Just when you thought it was safe to go outside…They’re coming back!”

The first three Expendables movies grossed over $800 million worldwide, and featured a who’s who of action stars including the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Terry Crews, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Steve Austin, Gary Daniels and Scott Adkins.

The Female Action Hero

Tom Jolliffe on female action heroes…

With the impending UK release of Atomic Blonde, it now seems a good time to consider the female action hero. You may think this ‘phenomena’ only stretches back to around the time Sigourney Weaver donned a mecha-suit, but it goes back further. There has certainly been a significant rise in the last two decades in female lead action movies, but still, particularly on the big screen, they remain the exception to the rule. For whatever reason I suppose they’ve generally not sold as successfully as the male counterparts. Maybe the atypical grunting, stoic action caveman suits the male species more, but perhaps there’s still an inherent sexism. Indeed, when the ladies have it their own action piece there tends to be a level of exploitation (Atomic Blonde has all the hallmarks of an explo film going by the trailers, but in a

Is the Internet killing the straight-to-home entertainment movie?

Tom Jolliffe on whether the internet is killing the straight-to-home entertainment movie…

Going to the cinema has long been an escape. It’s an event. A special outing. When that was your only option of seeing a film it obviously limited the options the general public had. The business became bigger and bigger. Cinemas spread through towns and cities, widening the options further. Then TV allowed us to watch at home. With that, it also bought TV premieres. Films made especially to bypass the big screen (and indeed offer the option of serials, sitcoms, soaps etc).

Then came the video age. This saw an explosion. A whole new wave. Suddenly the quantity of available films become astronomical. This avenue of distribution meant film-makers could shoot something relatively cheaply and then aim directly for the home market. Alternatively it also gave a theatrical film a second bite of the cherry if

Fantasia 2017: ‘Savage Dog’ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, Juju Chan, Cung Le, Keith David, Vladimir Kulich, Matthew Marsden, Charles Fathy | Written and Directed by Jesse V. Johnson

Ok, let’s all just say it together. Scott Adkins is the saviour of Dtv action movies. Charismatic, skilled and just a downright badass (and likeable) actor, whatever Adkins seemingly touches turns to gold – the Universal Soldier franchise was improved by his addition, as was the Undisputed series: in fact he made that particular fighting franchise Better with each and every sequel. Even the football-themed series Green Street was made watchable by the appearance of Adkins in the third installment, and that coming from someone who, typically, refuses to watch movies based on idiotic football hooligans.

Hold on… Turns out I may have a man-crush on Scott Adkins! And that’s not a bad thing.

Adkins has single-handedly kept the direct to market action genre alive,

Keith Strandberg interview: No Retreat No Surrender

Craig Lines May 3, 2017

For fans of 80s action cinema, No Retreat No Surrender holds a special place. We've been speaking to the man behind the series...

If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

Exclusive interview with actor Eric Jacobus

david j. moore chats with actor Eric Jacobus

The world has yet to learn the name Eric Jacobus. Ladies and gentlemen, hear the name and speak it because he’s here, and he’s about to break through. Working way off the grid and completely off the radar, Jacobus, a practitioner of Hapkido, has been building himself up through impressive short films and totally independent feature films, namely with two feature films Contour (2006) and Death Grip (2012), both of which he wrote, directed, and starred in, and the outstanding short films Rope-a-Dope (2013), Rope-a-Dope 2 (2015), and this year’s martial arts comedy Blindsided (2017). He’s already appeared in the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy (2014) as Stryker and in Segment A of The ABCs of Death 2 (2014), and he’s on a clear and calculated path of action stardom.

It’s obvious you’re really into Hong Kong movies; your movies
