‘The Aeronauts’: Ballooning Biopic Goes Up, Up and Away From the Facts
What do you say about a 19th-century ballooning movie that looks great in the air but doesn’t stick the emotional landing? That’s the problem with The Aeronauts, one of those “based on a true story” undertakings that are only partly true. The film reunites Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, who previously costarred as Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane in The Theory of Everything (both were nominated for an Oscar; only he won the trophy). Redmayne plays real-life British meteorologist James Glaisher, who thinks he can defy the

Amazon Documents Andy Murray Recovery

Amazon Prime Video’s U.K. offices have announced a new feature-length documentary, “Andy Murray: Resurfacing,” which tracks the British tennis superstar’s recovery from a recurring hip injury over a two-year period. Initially commissioned as a cut-and-dry injury comeback story, “Resurfacing” turned into something bigger as Murray struggled with setbacks which saw the former Wimbledon champion and number 1 ranked player in the world drop almost out of the top 100.

According to Amazon, the story will be told from Murray’s perspective, and offer hitherto unprecedented access to the medical, professional and private lives of Murray and those around him who supported him through the process. Almost

Operation Crossbow

‘Mission impossible’ escapism about high-stakes wartime sabotage looks at an authentic, dramatic episode of WW2 — the onslaught of futuristic V-Weapons on London — and then veers into fictional fantasy (think big explosions). George Peppard toughs it out to get free of his MGM contract. Lili Palmer and Barbara Rütting do the heavy lifting, while Sophia Loren is in as a glamorous sidebar. Weirdly, the movie all but lionizes the Germans that develop, test and fire the V-Weapon rockets at England … exaggerating their scientific progress and giving them a strange kind of ‘Right Stuff.’

‘Downton Abbey’ Creator Julian Fellowes on His Early Start as an Actor

  • Variety
‘Downton Abbey’ Creator Julian Fellowes on His Early Start as an Actor
Julian Fellowes was all wrong for his time — at first. When he graduated from drama school in 1973, working-class dramas onstage were all the rage, and the aspiring actor struggled to get an agent. He eventually snagged a supporting role in “A Touch of Spring,” a West End comedy that required him to fall down a set of stairs nightly and brought him his first mention in Variety, a May 21, 1975, review that dubbed him “effective as a feckless young American diplomat.” Roles in film and TV shows followed, but Fellowes found his greatest success at a keyboard: In 2002, he won an Oscar for writing “Gosford Park” and gave up acting for good. He created TV series “Downton Abbey” in 2010, with the show racking up 15 Emmys, including a pair for Fellowes. Now he’s back with more adventures of the Crawley clan and its servants — this time on the big screen in a film opening Sept.

Telluride Film Review: ‘The Aeronauts’

  • Variety
Telluride Film Review: ‘The Aeronauts’
There is something disarming about the joint presence of the ever-bashful Eddie Redmayne and the fiercely charismatic Felicity Jones that instantly feels wholesome. So when the duo embarks on a hot air balloon adventure in “Wild Rose” director Tom Harper’s “The Aeronauts,” you can’t help but tag along and root for “The Theory of Everything” co-stars. Playing a pair of complementary trailblazers that start off on the wrong foot, , even if it operates on a handful of clichés with little character-based substance to speak of.

Which is why Amazon Studios’ two-week-only exclusive theatrical window slated for December is a curious release strategy for a film whose greatest selling point is the reasonable amount of greenscreen visual wonder it delivers through a pair of enchanting leads. With his signature on-screen amiability (even when his character is being difficult or grumpy), Redmayne plays real-life scientist James Glaisher, who dreams of

The first trailer for Amazon's The Aeronauts has landed. The movie, which is based on a true story, sees Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones reunite for the first time since The Theory of Everything and it looks like a pretty intense ride from the trailer. Now, we have our first look at the footage and it doesn't look like it's for the faint of heart.

The Aeronauts takes place in 1862, as daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) teams up with pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) to advance human knowledge of the weather while flying higher than anyone in recorded history.
