Succession Season 2 Episode 9

While last week’s “Dundee” took a far more fast-and-loose approach to Succession’s typical episode model (complete with a fawning “L to the Og” rap), the second season’s penultimate episode adopts a far darker, more sinister tone. There are plenty of examples to flesh out, but the most immediate one is the cold open, during which the Roys and their confidants watch a Waystar Royco whistleblower’s exclusive interview on a 60 Minutes-esque news program.

“It’s bullsh*t!” Logan (Brian Cox) declares after changing the channel. “Clearly [Sandy Furness is] backing him. Clearly. With his buddy and his six f*ckin shell companies. Sick bastards who’d f*cking do and say anything!”

Yet when Roman (Kieran Culkin) notes

Adam Sandler, 'Uncut Gems' Team Talk Capturing "Frenetic" Nature of New York

Adam Sandler, 'Uncut Gems' Team Talk Capturing
Hollywood is no stranger to making movies in and about New York. What's rarer is something as deeply or authentically reflective of the city as Uncut Gems, the latest film from directing duo, brothers and native New Yorkers Josh and Benny Safdie.

"This city is frenetic, and there's no other way to describe this movie other than frenetic," said Uncut Gems actor Eric Bogosian at the New York Film Festival premiere of the A24 film on Thursday night. "I mean, you absolutely get caught up in the energy."

In addition to the Uncut Gems creative team, the screening ...

Adam Sandler has a real ‘Gem’: Actor screens ‘Uncut Gems’ for enthusiastic DGA audience in NYC [Watch]
Writer-directors Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie hung around the diamond district of New York City for 10 years. So they knew for a long time that they were going to make “Uncut Gems.” They just didn’t know exactly when. At a screening and Q&a for press and industry on October 2 at New York City’s DGA Theater, the pair revealed that they knew the time was right when Adam Sandler agreed to play jewelry broker — and degenerate gambler — Howard Ratner. The character may be a loser, but he’s a charismatic one. Watch their Q&a above.

“What I love about Howard is he’s a ‘partner-guy.’ At any moment he can take anyone on as a partner. He says, ‘We’re going to defeat the world. We’re going to do it against all odds,'” revealed Josh Safdie. The filmmakers knew Sandler could bring life to this

Adam Sandler on Oscar Buzz, Working With the Safdie Brothers and ‘Uncut Gems’ as a ‘Love Letter’ to New York City

Adam Sandler on Oscar Buzz, Working With the Safdie Brothers and ‘Uncut Gems’ as a ‘Love Letter’ to New York City
The many, mercurial moods of New York City and the jarring rhythm of its streets have long been among the greatest fascinations of film. “Serpico” and “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Mean Streets” and “Manhattan” all looked to break the frenetic pace of the city and expose, often as brashly as its subject, the virtuosic and irrepressible characters who walk its streets.

Uncut Gems,” the newest offering by “Good Time” creators Ben and Joshua Safdie, is an unhinged, frenetic study of a New York diamond jeweler, caught in a maniacal and unendurably suspenseful crescendo of gambling debts, adultery, and a last-ditch scheme to unload a million-dollar Ethiopian diamond.

Adam Sandler stars in the film, channeling the same manic and dramatic energy which Paul Thomas Anderson first drew from the comedian in “Punch-Drunk Love.” On the red carpet of the New York Film Festival, where the Film Society of Lincoln Center presented “Uncut Gems” Thursday night,

Timothée Chalamet Calls Safdie Brothers’ ‘Uncut Gems’ The ‘Ride of an Absolute Lifetime’

It’s only a matter of time before native New Yorker Timothée Chalamet joins forces with Gotham’s most exciting filmmaking duo, but until the actor stars in a film from Josh and Benny Safdie, it seems Chalamet is content to commit his admiration for the pair to paper. In the newest issue of Variety, dedicated to its “New Power of New York list,” the “Lady Bird” and “Beautiful Boy” star pens a loving essay about the brothers and their work. Could an on-screen collaboration be far behind?

“The pair have continuously put out contemporary, raw and untethered work over the last decade, each film building on the traits of the prior, but never once sacrificing their innate grittiness,” Chalamet writes, before expounding on the charms of their earlier films like “Daddy Longlegs” and “Good Time.”

Chalamet continues, “But 2019 has given us the brothers’ most full-throated, most wholehearted, most complete

Timothée Chalamet on Why the Safdie Brothers Are His Favorite Party Crashers

  • Variety
For Variety’s latest issue, we asked Timothée Chalamet to write a tribute to Josh and Benny Safdie, two of 50 people to make our New Power of New York list. For the full list, click here.

Have you ever been to a fancy party with Josh and Benny Safdie? They stick out like sore thumbs. If they had it their way, they would arrive to the Oscars via subway and climb up to the Dolby from belowground. The New York directing duo have taken it upon themselves to keep alive the mantle of gritty and raucously interior inner-city films built by spiritual kin like Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee. The pair have continuously put out contemporary, raw and untethered work over the last decade, each film building on the traits of the prior, but never once sacrificing their innate grittiness.

An early NPR review of their film “Daddy Longlegs” stated:

Adam Sandler Shows Off His Dramatic Chops in ‘Uncut Gems’ Trailer
Adam Sandler portrays an erratic and obsessive New York jeweler turned gambling conman in the first trailer for A24’s “Uncut Gems,” a high-paced thriller from the Safdie brothers.

The new footage follows Howard Ratner (Sandler) in Manhattan’s diamond district, acquiring a rare Ethiopian opal which then-nba Celtics player Kevin Garnett (playing himself) shows interest in. The basketball star borrows the stone as a good-luck charm, and believing in the gem’s power, Ratner bets on the subsequent Celtics game, a high-risk move.

“I made a crazy risk, a gamble, and it’s about to pay off,” Ratner says.

Ratner begins to face the backlash of his gambling, and those affiliated with him demand their money back after he uses it to place bets. It leads to dangerous situations where Ratner even yells, seemingly to his wife, Dinah (Idina Menzel), to “get the kids out of the house.” Later in the trailer,

‘Uncut Gems’ Trailer: The Safdie Brothers Unleash a Powerhouse Adam Sandler

‘Uncut Gems’ Trailer: The Safdie Brothers Unleash a Powerhouse Adam Sandler
What a whiplash of a year for Adam Sandler. After delivering his laziest comedy to date with Netflix’s “Murder Mystery” over the summer (read IndieWire’s D review here), Sandler returns to the big screen this December with what is being hailed out of the fall festivals as one of his best performances ever. Go figure.

Sandler is at the center of “Uncut Gems,” the latest crime thriller from indie darlings Josh and Benny Safdie. The directing duo is known for getting unhinged and gripping performances out of their leading actors (see Arielle Holmes in “Heaven Knows What” and Robert Pattinson in “Good Time”), and it appears Sandler is no exception in “Uncut Gems.”

The official plot synopsis for the movie reads: “‘Uncut Gems’ is a crime thriller about Howard Ratner (Sandler), a charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score. When he

‘Uncut Gems’ Trailer: Adam Sandler is on the Run in Safdies’ Diamond District Thriller

After naming Good Time the best film of 2017, expectations were sky-high for the Safdies’ follow-up Uncut Gems and it looks to have delivered the goods. Ahead of a December release, A24 has now released the first trailer for the Diamond District thriller starring none other than Adam Sandler. Also featuring Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett, Idina Menzel, Eric Bogosian, Judd Hirsch, The Weeknd, and Mike Francesa, it’s certainly one of the wildest casts of the year, which seems to match the Safdies’ kinetic approach.

Josh Lewis said in his review, “Sandler delivers one of his very best physical performances as Howard, making us genuinely feel every heated exasperation and crushing failure of his as he schemes and sweats his way all across New York City streets, cabs, and venues in garish Gucci shirts and loafers. At one point he physically flees his daughter’s school play, greeting her

Tiff Review: ‘Uncut Gems’ Finds the Safdies and Adam Sandler at the Top of Their Game

There are two consistently pervasive ideas in the films of New York filmmaking duo Josh and Benny Safdie. The first is their clear affection for the art and craft of hustling. From their autobiographical drama Daddy Longlegs to their verité junkie film Heaven Knows What there’s a reliable focus on the often thrilling process of social manipulation and coercion to point where stretches could briefly be mistaken for a con man film if it weren’t for how they never lose sight of how these actions intersect with economic class. For people on the margins of society it is not just a skill but a tool of survival, which is especially true in their moody and expressive 2017 feature Good Time which saw Robert Pattinson’s Connie spend an entire evening engaging in increasingly desperate transactional interactions all across New York in attempt to bail his brother out of prison.
