Film Review: ‘Scandalous: The Untold Story of the National Enquirer’

  • Variety
When grocery store shoppers snag a copy of Weekly World News (the rag responsible for the refuses-to-die “Bat Child” hoax), they know they’re getting fake news. But when they pick up the National Enquirer, it’s a far more ambiguous prospect.

Enquirer headlines are deliberately provocative, shouting details of the private lives of real people — including Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and Oprah Winfrey — from their strategic perch in checkout aisles across America. Over the course of nearly seven decades, the tabloid crushed the aspirations of at least one presidential contender (by publishing the photo that exposed Gary Hart’s extramarital affair) and crusaded to elect another, running negative coverage of Donald Trump’s political opponents, which the candidate conveniently referenced in his 2016 campaign.

A hard-hitting — and at times hard-to-stomach — documentary from “Thunder Soul” director Mark Landsman, “Scandalous: The Untold Story of the National Enquirer” subjects the tabloid to the

Myles Garrett/Mason Rudolph NFL Fight Draws Comment From Samuel L. Jackson, Drew Carey

  • Deadline
NFL commentators and various sports reporters have all weighed in on the Thursday Night Football fight between Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.

The brawl at the end of the game included Garrett ripping off Rudolph’s helmet and slamming him in the head with it, a blow that caused the NFL to suspend him for an indeterminate period. The longest suspension in league history lasted 12 games, and Garrett may be in line to extend that record.

But there’s been a few other football fans weighing in on the incident, including Samuel L. Jackson, Drew Carey and O.J. Simpson.

Some of the online reactions from film and TV personalities:

‘Scandalous’ Film Review: National Enquirer Doc Couldn’t Be More Timely, Damning

  • The Wrap
Say what you will about “Scandalous: The True Story of the National Enquirer,” but there’s no denying that Mark Landsman’s biting documentary is right on cue.

Just this week, NBC posted a story about how the presidential impeachment hearings — a monumental event in the history of American politics — “lacked the pizazz necessary to capture public attention.” Everyone who saw that piece probably wondered what the heck has become of American journalism, and “Scandalous” has the answer: It got tabloided. It got tabloided big time.

Landsman’s documentary is a multifaceted trek through the last half-century, tracing the history of the notorious periodical — famous for celebrity scandals, UFO sightings and political intrigue — from a sporting publication to a best-selling mainstay at supermarkets everywhere. That would have been enough to make a fast-paced and exciting documentary, all by itself. The formulation of The National Enquirer was directly linked to the

‘Days of Our Lives’ Crew Dumped From Contracts As Show Enters Indefinite Hiatus

Like sands through the hourglass, the entire cast of NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” has found themselves unceremoniously dumped in your grandma’s attic.

The producers of the long-running soap opera released the whole of the cast from their contracts and the series will go into indefinite hiatus at the end of the month, according to TVLine. The move comes as Sony Pictures Television and NBC negotiate over renewing the series.

The decision comes just days after the show celebrated its 54th anniversary, during which it commemorated the occasion with a narrative time-jump skipping ahead a year.

If this is truly the end for the NBC staple, it leaves only three American soap operas airing in what used to be an extremely lucrative genre. Only ABC’s “General Hospital,” which got its start in 1963, has been on the air longer than “Days,” with two CBS series, “The Young and the Restless

ESPN Marks ’30 For 30′ Anniversary With Michael Vick Story Leading Upcoming Slate

  • Deadline
The past decade for ESPN has been an eventful one, to put it mildly.

The Disney-owned sports powerhouse has broadcast some of the highest-rated games in its history, re-upped with the NBA and NFL, launched new networks and entered the streaming race. But it has also coped with industrywide pay-tv subscriber declines, management changes and intense scrutiny of its relationships with league partners and the political views of its talent.

Over that stretch, arguably ESPN’s biggest creative triumph has been its 30 for 30 franchise, which is marking its 10th anniversary this month. Crowned by the Oscar-winning breakthrough of O.J.: Made in America in 2016, the banner has been attached to more than 100 feature films, dozens of shorts and a slate of podcasts. Conceived at a time when sports narratives were largely confined to premium cable networks, print publications and one-off independent documentaries, the series has grown from a

O.J. Simpson Terminator Myth Gets Debunked by James Cameron
James Cameron says Arnold Schwarzenegger is "flat-out wrong" about The Terminator O.J. Simpson myth. Schwarzenegger has told people for years that the Terminator painting hanging in his office originally had Simpson in it. The actor claims that Cameron did the painting and then painted his face over Simpson's when he got the role. However, the director says that is all wrong, and that Simpson wasn't ever even a real possibility to star in the now-classic movie. The director had this to say.

"Let me correct that right now. Arnold is literally just wrong. I know it's hard to imagine! You don't argue with Arnold... Arnold was never offered Reese. O.J. Simpson was never in the mix at all. That was rejected out of hand before it ever got any traction."

As for that famous painting that Arnold Schwarzenegger has talked about for years, it was actually done by James Cameron.

Mena Suvari Stars as Nicole Brown Simpson in Bizarre Trailer for O.J. Simpson Movie
First thoughts after watching this trailer: "This ain't it." Mena Suvari is taking on the role of the late Nicole Brown Simpson for the new fictional film The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and if the trailer is any indication then the entire movie is going to be one wild ride. For starters, it seems like O.J. Simpson is not portrayed as her alleged killer. Instead it seems the writers are placing the blame on Glen Rogers, a prolific serial killer who claimed to have killed Nicole and Ron. The movie gets even more interesting when you consider the cast for the film. Mena Suvari is playing the lead, while Taryn Manning is portraying Faye Resnick, who the writers...

Cuba Gooding Jr Cuffed With New Sealed Indictment As Groping Trial Pushed Back, Again

Cuba Gooding Jr Cuffed With New Sealed Indictment As Groping Trial Pushed Back, Again
Now facing yet another indictment, today’s start of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s trial on criminal charges of forcible touching has been postponed a further five days.

A circumspect Manhattan Assistant D.A. Jenna Long told Judge Marisol Martinez Alonso today that allegations of a separate “incident” had been put before the grand jury – the resulting indictment covers the previous charge and incorporates the new one. Whether or not, this new charge is connected to the additional investigation into the Oscar winner that prosecutors said in late June that the NYPD was conducting isn’t known.

What we do know for sure from Gooding’s short stint in New York state court this morning in Manhattan is that the new charge will be unsealed when the trial finally starts on October 15.

“The new charge is an unsubstantiated allegation from a long time ago,” declared defense attorney Mark Heller in a

Cuba Gooding Jr. Faces New Indictment for ‘Additional Incident’ in Groping Case
Cuba Gooding Jr. has been charged with a new crime after Manhattan prosecutors revealed in court Thursday that the actor was indicted in connection to a groping case and a “previously uncharged incident,” the Manhattan D.A.’s office told TheWrap.

Gooding Jr. was charged with a misdemeanor for forcible touching in June after he was accused of groping a woman’s breast at a Manhattan bar. But Assistant D.A. Jenna Long stated in court Thursday that the charges in the indictment cover the existing incident as well as “a new, previously uncharged incident.”

“The defendant has been indicted on the charges in this docket, as well as an additional incident previously uncharged,” Long said in court, according to Vulture.

Oliver Stone: ‘Joker’ Reminds Me of ‘Natural Born Killers’ Backlash — ‘The Future Is Murder’

  • Indiewire
“Natural Born Killers” arrived in multiplexes in 1994 like a molotov cocktail. Despite being dropped by Warner Bros. into the late-August graveyard of release dates, Oliver Stone’s serial-killer satire ended up at number one at the U.S. box office, and has remained a cult favorite since debuting 25 years ago.

As part of Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest, the film will screen in 35mm, in its unrated version, Tuesday night, with director Oliver Stone in attendance at the Egyptian Theatre. In a recent telephone interview with IndieWire, the notoriously prickly director insisted on keeping the Q&a on topic with “Natural Born Killers.” With regards to his upcoming Hollywood memoir slated for 2020, ill-received comments about anti-gay propaganda in Putin’s Russia, or Stone’s relationship to Putin as evinced by his 2017 documentary “The Putin Interviews”: Stone’s answer? “I don’t want to talk about that.”

Okay, then. Shocking to
