Emmys 2019: Why Cultural Conversations Around Projects and Performers Boost Awards Chances

  • Variety
Visibility matters.

This is a refrain most often — and most importantly — sung about the representation of women, people of color, Lgbtq, those with disabilities and other marginalized groups within the entertainment industry. But in many ways, it is crucial for Emmy nominees, too.

After all, with more than 500 scripted series alone, the odds that the 25,000 members of the Television Academy have actually seen any part of a show, let alone all of it, get slimmer every year. Series or individuals with larger footprints have seemingly pushed forward this year. The ones that did land nominations scored accolades across the ballot.

Now that the time left on final round voting is ticking down quickly, visibility — both from a campaign perspective and a larger cultural conversation — will likely push one nominee to the front of the pack.

“It’s challenging to look back to see if there was any correlation to getting

Tracy Morgan Joins Eddie Murphy's Coming To America 2

Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock alum Tracy Morgan has joined Eddie Murphy in Paramount PicturesComing To America 2. He will also star alongside Arsenio Hall, Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne, James Earl Jones, Rick Ross, and Paul Bates.

According to Deadline, “Jones will portray the son’s mother, who had a one-night stand with Akeem. Morgan’s character is Reem, a hustler who is Jones’ brother.” I’m a fan of Morgan ,and it’s great to see that he got cast in this film. He’s definitely going to make a great addition to the cast and deliver some fun comedy.

The original 1988 comedy followed Murphy as Prince Akeem, “a spoiled prince from the fictional African nation of Zamunda, who arrives in Queens, New York, and in undercover fashion gets a job at a McDonald’s knockoff while trying to find a wife.”

The sequel will focus on Akeem,

Eddie Murphy will thankfully be returning to reprise his role as the prince of Zamunda, but he's bringing along some key figures from the first film - including Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones - and plenty of new faces as well.

While the original film saw Akeem travel to America to eventually find his New Yorker bride Lisa, Coming 2 America will introduce us to new Zamunda royalty, like Akeem's daughter played by Kiki Layne and the long-lost son he's just discovered has been living in Queens. From the looks of the stars joining the project so far, we have no doubt that Akeem's journey to meet his son and shape him into a prince will feature a host of colorful characters, just like the first film did.

Craig Brewer is directing the sequel to John Landis' blockbuster smash hit. Brewer most recently directed Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes in the upcoming Netflix biopic Dolemite is My Name.
