‘The Addams Family’ Review: The Family Comes Full Circle

One of the best things about the new MGM The Addams Family animated film is that it brings the family full circle. The Addams Family began as a comic strip by cartoonist Charles Addams in the New Yorker Magazine, and was then turned into the mega-popular TV show in 1964. The property briefly became an animated TV series in 1973, and then hit the big time with two feature films in the early '90s.

The last major incarnation of Charles Addams' creation was a popular Tony-nominated Broadway musical. But now, the family is back -- and back to their roots with the new animated The Addams Family. While not hand drawn, the animation is closer to the comic strips than it is to Broadway musicals, and it just feels right seeing the macabre family in this form.

The Addams Family is the story of Gomez Addams (voiced by Oscar Issacs) and his wife,

Box Office: ‘Joker’ Conquering Newcomers With $60 Million

  • Variety
It’s still all smiles for “Joker,” which grossed another $17 million on its second Friday at the domestic box office.

If estimates hold, the Warner Bros. villain flick could score another $60 million come Sunday, down just 37% from its $96 million box office debut. That’s above earlier predictions, which saw the film landing somewhere in the $50 million range, and could push the movie past the $185 million mark by the end of the weekend.

“Joker” also had no problem conquering this weekend’s box office newcomers MGM and United Artists Releasing’s “The Addams Family” and Paramount’s “Gemini Man.” Likely fueled by family audiences looking for a more family-friendly alternative, “The Addams Family” came in at No. 2 with $9.7 million from 4007 locations. If estimates hold, the film should take home around $33 million by the end of the weekend.

Charlize Theron Speaks Immigration, Diversity in ‘The Addams Family’
They’re creepy, they’re kooky, and they’re an allegory for immigration in America.

Charlize Theron discussed the changing face of the nuclear family and her animated film, “The Addams Family,” with Variety at the movie’s recent premiere at the Century City Mall in Los Angeles.

“When you think of [the Addams] being around since the sixties, that’s pretty powerful — that they’ve always had their same values,” Theron told Variety‘s Marc Malkin. “But, this moment and time, there needs to be so much more encouragement. We need to question the norm a little bit more and we need to find kindness and understanding for others that might not look like us or might not talk like us or might not sound like us. So, to be a part of something like that, and I know children and their families are going to go see that, if that

‘Joker’ Dominating Box Office Again With $50 Million as Will Smith’s ‘Gemini Man’ Flops

‘Joker’ Dominating Box Office Again With $50 Million as Will Smith’s ‘Gemini Man’ Flops
Joaquin Phoenix remains the ruler of the North American box office as the second weekend of “Joker” heads for an easy victory with as much as $50 million at 4,374 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

That’s far above a trio of new entries, led by animated comedy “The Addams Family” with about $30 million at 4,007 venues — above the high end of forecasts. Will Smith’s “Gemini Man” is coming in under expectations with about $19 million at 3,642 locations. Adam DeVine’s artificial intelligence comedy “Jexi” is showing little traction with about $3 million at 3,600 screens.

“Joker” gave a jolt to last weekend’s box office with $96.2 million in the fifth-largest domestic opening of 2019 — achieved amid worries about the potential violence that the film’s dark themes might evoke. It’s showing plenty of traction at multiplexes with a decline of under 50%.

“Joker” has already become profitable for Warner Bros., which partnered with Village Roadshow

Gemini Man – Review

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Will Smith in Gemini Man from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

Will Smith fans get a double dose of the star in the action thriller Gemini Man, where Smith plays a retired assassin who is being targeted by a younger version of himself. This film is action-heavy but less sci-fi than the premise might suggest, and the most surprising thing about this conventional action thriller is that it is directed by Ang Lee, the Oscar-winning director of Brokeback Mountain, Life Of Pi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the oft-overlooked gem Ride With The Devil.

Basically, Gemini Man is a movie for Will Smith fans rather than Ang Lee fans. Focused on showcasing its star, this action film uses a whole toolbox of tried-and-true action tropes, like chases through crowded streets, one-on-one face-of fights and familiar plot devices and character types. This movie is not

Box Office: ‘Gemini Man’ Tops ‘Addams Family’ on Thursday Night
Will Smith’s “Gemini Man” topped the animated comedy “The Addams Family” with $1.6 million at 3,000 North American sites on Thursday night.

Paramount’s sci-fi thriller launched similarly to Brad Pitt’s “Ad Astra,” which earned $1.5 million from Thursday previews before opening with $19 million. “The Addams Family” brought in $1.3 million at about 3,000 sites on Thursday.

Both new titles are likely to trail Warner Bros.’ second frame of “Joker,” which outperformed expectations last weekend with a $96.2 million domestic bow. The Joaquin Phoenix-starrer, which has hit $130 million domestically and $280 million worldwide in a week, should take in as much as $45 million in North America this weekend.

Gemini Man” debuts at 3,642 locations, with more than a third of those screening the film in high frame rate 3D+ format, employed by director Ang Lee to show Smith alongside a younger clone of himself. After a nearly 20-year gestation to the big screen, “Gemini Man

The Addams Family (2019) – Review

Move over Abominable, it’s time for another big animated feature film to hit the ole’ multiplex. Unlike the past Summer’s hit Toy Story 4 and the upcoming Frozen 2, it’s not a sequel, but it’s not exactly an original concept or idea. Even though the characters have been kicking around the pop culture ozone since 1937, they’re now in “uncharted territory”. Yes, it was over eighty years ago when Charles Addams debuted this frightfully funny family in the New Yorker magazine. They were part of a series of “one panel” cartoons so popular that they continued to pop up in issues, eventually being collected in book form. Eventually their creator gave them first names along with the same surname as the artist. It wasn’t until the 1960s that they gained their greatest fame as part of the fantasy TV sitcom fad. Now, there’s a bit

‘The Addams Family’ Review: Beloved Creepy, Kooky Family Gets a Creaky, Kiddie Animated Origin Story

When cartoonist Charles Addams created kooky Addams family as a one-page comic in the late 1930s, the initial gag hinged on how such a morbid clan couldn’t quite comprehend a world unsettled by their ghoulish ways. Over time, the family has permeated every inch of the entertainment complex, from TV shows to movies (and then more TV shows and movies), video games to a stage musical, even an incredibly popular pinball game. At its heart, however, the Addams family has always been a keen gothic metaphor for anyone who has ever felt like an outcast for embracing the macabre.

Which is why the Addams, for all their love of nasty things and affection for decidedly R-rated delights, is perfectly suited for a kid-friendly comedy about the perils of a world that doesn’t value individuality. Alas, that’s easier said than done: Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon’s animated

Film Review: ‘The Addams Family’

Film Review: ‘The Addams Family’
There must have been something in the water the week of Sept. 18, 1964. That’s when the ghouls-are-us sitcom “The Addams Family” premiered on ABC — and exactly six days later, the ghouls-are-us sitcom “The Munsters” premiered on CBS. True, only one of those shows was based on the sinister genius of Charles Addams (whose first cartoon to feature what would ultimately be known as the Addams Family appeared in The New Yorker in 1937). Yet the two shows shared a remarkably similar trajectory and attitude.

Each one lasted for just two seasons, but together they marked a decisive turn of the entertainment screw, with the shows transforming Old Hollywood horror into gothic-absurdist laugh-track kitsch. You could say that “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” got there first, but that 1948 classic played the monsters straight, whereas “The Addams Family” and “The Munsters,” taking off from the camp spirit (and spirits) of Bobby Pickett’s 1962 novelty hit “Monster Mash,

‘The Addams Family’ Film Review: Creepy, Kooky Characters Live Again in Fun Animated Feature
There are certainly a lot of missed opportunities in the latest “The Addams Family” remake: Like why, if you have Oscar Isaac, would you turn him into just a voice in an animated film when the man is just a perfect, real-life Gomez?

And some of the animation choices don’t really convey why this creepy, kooky family has been so beloved for so many decades. Thankfully, other choices that seem out-of-the-box — Snoop Dogg as Cousin It? Christina Aguilera singing on the soundtrack? — help co-directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan (the duo behind “Sausage Party”) deliver an enjoyable, light-hearted Halloween treat that will surprisingly charm families and let them have a few laughs together.

On the wedding day of Gomez (voiced by Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron), the ceremony is overtaken by people who want these monsters out of their town. Chased out of yet another home by torch-bearing villagers,

Can Joker Laugh Off Gemini Man & The Addams Family at the Box Office?

  • MovieWeb
Joker finally arrived at the box office last weekend and set a new October record with a $96.2 million take. The Clown Prince of Crime will be facing some relatively stiff competition this weekend, as Paramount's Gemini Man starring Will Smith and MGM's animated take on The Addams Family arrive in theaters. CBS Films is also releasing the comedy Jexi, but none of them will likely have enough gas in the tank to claim the top spot.

Warner Bros. should see another weekend atop the box office as Joker is expected to nab between $42 million and $48 million in its second frame, based on industry estimates. While critics remain divided on the Todd Phillips-directed DC Comics adaptation, the R-rated flick has proved to be a winner with audiences. Joaquin Phoenix's take on the iconic villain is connecting with moviegoers in a big way, as the movie has already passed $300 million worldwide.

Kimmel suggested that Theron not tell people that the glove is from an injury and instead try to pass it off as a trendy new style.

Can Will Smith’s ‘Gemini Man’ or ‘Addams Family’ Upset ‘Joker’ at the Box Office?

  • The Wrap
Through all the headlines and outrage, “Joker” has not loosened its grip on pop culture. With a $96 million opening weekend and strong audience reception, all signs point to a strong second weekend where it should stay No. 1 against two newcomers: Paramount/Skydance’s “Gemini Man” and UA/MGM’s “The Addams Family.”

Both new releases are projected for an opening in the low $20 million range, which “Joker” would be able to top even if it suffers a weekend-to-weekend drop of 65%. While such a drop is possible considering how the Warner Bros. release has outperformed many analysts’ expectations, a 65% drop would put it at around $33 million in its second weekend, which should be more than enough to hold on to the No. 1 spot.
