1. Warcraft: The Beginning (2016)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

32 Metascore

As an Orc horde invades the planet Azeroth using a magic portal, a few human heroes and dissenting Orcs must attempt to stop the true evil behind this war.

Director: Duncan Jones | Stars: Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper

Votes: 229,326 | Gross: $47.37M

This was great fun and far exceeded my expectations. It looks great and the visual effects truly bring the fantasy and real worlds together. It has a thumping dramatic score and does extremely well in explaining the rules of its universe and then sticks to them (which always scores well with me) even if, like me, you have never played the game. It adds some interesting backstory to the characters and is genuinely thrilling in many scenes. It explores good vs. evil, loyalty and sacrifice. Non-specific spoiler: Also a plus point that major characters placed in grave danger do not always make it out of said situation alive (the contrary to this always annoyed me in the 'LOTR' films). Highly recommended. (Col Needham)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn | Stars: Elle Fanning, Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves, Karl Glusman

Votes: 75,035 | Gross: $1.33M

I am most looking forward to Nicolas Winding Refn’s 'The Neon Demon,' which is an Amazon Studios release I missed at Cannes last week because it premiered after we left. However, I am attending the UK premiere as Nicolas’s guest. So, that somewhat makes up for it! I am already listening to another excellent soundtrack by Cliff Martinez on Spotify (not available on Prime Music). The Cannes screening included a 20-minute standing ovation, which was one of the longest at the festival, and also walkouts and boos at the press screening. So, I am looking forward to another divisive and shocking movie … What else from Nicolas?! (Col Needham)
