Terrific TV Series

by countbeefer | created - 14 Dec 2012 | updated - 3 weeks ago | Public

This is a list of my personal favorite TV series. This is an entirely subjective list, and I tend to favor Sci-Fi and Fantasy series.

My favorite series include sci-fi and fantasy epics, sitcoms, a few animated series, and other scripted shows.

Frell! The characters, the humor, the story, the special effects...this show has it all. 4 seasons of some of the best sci-fi on the small or big screen, Farscape is a masterpiece. The 2004 miniseries The Peacekeeper Wars provides a large-scale cinematic ending to a remarkable series.

2. Star Trek: Voyager (1995–2001)

Pulled to the far side of the galaxy, where the Federation is seventy-five years away at maximum warp speed, a Starfleet ship must cooperate with Maquis rebels to find a way home.

Stars: Kate Mulgrew, Robert Beltran, Roxann Dawson, Robert Duncan McNeill

Votes: 52,826

A childhood favorite of mine, the opening theme gets me every time. The later seasons allow this show to truly shine. The Holographic Doctor is one of my favorite characters of all time. Captain Janeway, Seven of Nine, Tuvok...the crew of Voyager are all fun to get to know and care about over the course of this seven season journey. Did I mention the opening theme was phenomenal?

3. Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008)

Water... Earth... Fire... Air...

Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.

5. Star Trek: Enterprise (2001–2005)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

A century before Captain Kirk's five-year mission, Jonathan Archer captains the United Earth ship Enterprise during the early years of Starfleet, leading up to the Earth-Romulan War and the formation of the Federation.

Stars: Scott Bakula, John Billingsley, Jolene Blalock, Dominic Keating

Votes: 41,030

I don't care what anyone says...I love the opening theme, Captain Archer is awesome (Porthos too... :), the Xindi were phenomenal, and the time travel is well done. If only the show had lasted more than 4 seasons! It could have ranked even higher had it had a full 6 or 7 seasons to come full circle. Regardless, this is a beautiful show.

6. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999)

Stars: Avery Brooks, Rene Auberjonois, Cirroc Lofton, Alexander Siddig

Votes: 46,340

Another strong Star Trek series, this is a first class show. The last few seasons chronicling the Dominion War are some of the finest sci-fi I've ever seen. Ever. Odo and Quark are favorites of mine, and once again the opening theme is excellent.

7. Stargate Universe (2009–2011)

Not Rated | 43 min | Drama, Sci-Fi

Trapped on an Ancient spaceship billions of light-years from home, a group of soldiers and civilians struggle to survive and find their way back to Earth.

Stars: Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque

Votes: 45,253

A show cancelled before its time, Universe is a masterpiece. Some compare it unfavorably to the modern Battlestar Galactica, but I think this show surpasses Galactica in every conceivable way. Galactica is a solid show and it's still in my top 40, but how can it possibly compare to a show that ponders the creation of the entire Universe? Universe gets stronger the more episodes it builds upon, and Robert Carlyle's character Rush is the best part of the show.

8. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019– )

Earth. Fire. Air. Water. Only the Avatar can master all four elements and bring balance to the world.

10. Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994)

Stars: Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, Stephen Furst, Andreas Katsulas

Votes: 26,411

After a patchy start, Babylon 5 eventually earns its spot among the pantheon of great sci-fi shows with its later seasons chronicling the Shadow War and all that followed. G'Kar is easily the standout of the series, and watching his character arc unfold is a memorable experience. Babylon 5 takes you on a 5 year journey and asks the most fundamental questions of sentient existence: Why are you here? Do you have anything worth living for?

14. Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007)

Incoming Wormhole! This is an excellent military sci-fi show that combines the best elements of mythology from ancient Egypt, the Norse gods, King Arthur, and many others to create a one-of-a-kind show that shines.

Indeed.

Stars: Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, David Hewlett, Jason Momoa

Votes: 57,874

This is essentially tied with SG-1, as the characters, mythology, and action are all on par with classic Stargate. The only reason SG-1 ranks slightly higher is because it had double the seasons as well as two fantastic films to tie up the story. Atlantis has a distinct look and the city of Atlantis is beautiful and the wraith are the perfect villains. And let's not forget Rodney McKay...

16. Xena: Warrior Princess (1995–2001)

TV-PG | 45 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

No longer certain, that one ever does win a war, I am. For in fighting the battles, the bloodshed, already lost we have. Yet, open to us a path remains. That unknown to the Sith is. Through this path, victory we may yet find. Not victory in the Clone Wars, but victory for all time.

It was a simple story about a boy who was lost and a girl who was broken. They fought alongside a survivor, a war veteran, and a fallen Knight. An odd thing happens when we die, our senses vanish. Taste, touch, smell and sound become a distant memory, but our sight? Ah, our sight expands and we can suddenly see the world we left behind so clearly. Of course most of what's visible to the dead could also be seen by the living, if they would only take the time to look.

Making a creative transition from the world of 3D to 2D animation through a trio of "Baymax Dreams" shorts, the series gets off to a great start. The adventures of Hiro and his friends make for exciting, humorous, and often heartwarming entertainment from one episode to the next. Votes: 67,579

He's dead Jim. Oh, but Star Trek is far from dead. While the original series can seem dated, the chemistry, comradery, and humor between the three main characters Kirk, Spock, and Bones is unmatched. Some episodes are bad...but overall the show itself is unforgettable. The films thankfully improve upon the series and bring back a truly all-star cast.

Votes: 230,360

Burn the land and boil the sea...you can't take the sky from me. This show is (quite literally) a wagon train to the stars. The Wild West meets Outer Space in a short-lived, yet brilliant sci-fi spectacle. The show had its flaws, but didn't have much chance to grow in its short life. The film Serenity thankfully gives closure to this show that sadly only lasted half a season. But what an awesome half season that was...

Stars: Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Jamie Bamber, James Callis

Votes: 143,896

Another excellent opening theme...another (mostly) solid cast...another great sci-fi show. Although it takes itself too seriously at times and the Cylons can be underwhelming in parts, the show itself is top notch. The character drama is both a plus and a minus at times, but the overall story is highly engaging and exciting. A truly worthy series with a solid story and a strong impact. So say we all.
