Movies I Have Seen in 2019by youtuber129 | created - 10 months ago | updated - 1 day ago | Public
If movies have the same number, it doesn't mean I enjoyed them equally, it was based on their quality in what they tried to do and whether they succeeded. BTW, horror movies are graded more strictly than realism movies or fine film, simply because you have to work much harder to make them spectacular, and if I compare all horror movies together, that is how I make my grade for them.

1. Bright Star (2009)
PG | 119 min | Biography, Drama, Romance
The three-year romance between 19th-century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne near the end of his life.
Votes: 24,338 | Gross: $4.44M
What an amazing movie, it has to be my favorite period piece, I was bawling as though my mother had died, I swear. A beautiful love story, even more gripping knowing it was unconsummated and ended so tragically.
2. Elizabeth (1998)
R | 124 min | Biography, Drama, History
The early years of the reign of Elizabeth I of England and her difficult task of learning what is necessary to be a monarch.
Votes: 87,522 | Gross: $30.08M
I love me some Joseph Fiennes, and he's great in this, as is Cate Blanchett, who I don't focus on too much, but she was very transformative in this role. A great 90s period piece.
3. The Piano Teacher (2001)
R | 131 min | Drama
A young man romantically pursues his masochistic piano teacher.
Votes: 51,133 | Gross: $1.90M
Michael Haneke is a great director, and this film is just so different and daring, and what a crazy but simple ending. The characters had so much depth, and that mother-daughter relationship hit close to home, as a daughter. This movie tackled psycho-sexual issues so well.
4. Lady Macbeth (2016)
R | 89 min | Drama, Romance
In 19th-century rural England, a young bride who has been sold into marriage discovers an unstoppable desire within herself as she enters into an affair with a worker on her estate.
Votes: 16,175 | Gross: $1.13M
I was having a period piece kick, I'll admit. This film was so different, I never imagined that (spoiler) the main character would become the bad guy, what a great direction to go for a change. The ending left me sad, but told me that the psychological damage had already been done. I also didn't get the Macbeth reference, I thought that was the character's name, but after the fact it makes sense.
5. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
R | 112 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Kevin's mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly dangerous things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.
Votes: 127,168 | Gross: $1.74M
This film was all over the place, I didn't like the time jumps. I also didn't really enjoy Tilda Swinton in this role, she only fits well into films where she can be an odd woman (Narnia), not an extremely normal one. I didn't like the psychological statement this film made, that bad kids are bad from birth, and that somehow the mom wasn't at fault, even though she did nothing to get her child help when he clearly needed it. However, the directing was good.
6. Ken Park (2002)
Not Rated | 93 min | Drama
Ken Park is about several Californian skateboarders' lives and relationships with and without their parents.
The graphic sexuality didn't really have a purpose, I didn't need to see real penises and jizz to get the punch of the scenes, you know? I like the family situations explored, but not everything was explained by the end, especially how the kids actually knew Ken Park.
7. Candy (2006)
R | 108 min | Drama, Romance
A poet falls in love with an art student who gravitates to his bohemian lifestyle -- and his love of heroin. Hooked as much on one another as they are on the drug, their relationship alternates between states of oblivion, self-destruction, and despair.
Votes: 41,429 | Gross: $0.04M
It was a great movie, but it was hard to support the characters or understand their motivations (I know that's the point), maybe I just wish their story went differently or perhaps I have less sympathy for drug addicts than other people do.
8. Apollo 18 (2011)
PG-13 | 86 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi
Decades-old found footage from NASA's abandoned Apollo 18 mission, where two American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon.
Votes: 52,122 | Gross: $17.69M
I really fricking liked this movie, it has a 6 because I didn't like it as much as higher budget horror films, but for what it tried to do, it was damn solid and I enjoyed it. The ending was kinda "Oh... ok", but it did leave me sad for the characters. At least the movie made me care for them.
9. Moon (2009)
R | 97 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi
Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.
Votes: 318,087 | Gross: $5.01M
This movie just was not what I thought it was going to be, that's why my rating is so low. I was led to believe it was a sci-fi horror on some level, not like Alien but something with suspense. Events in this movie just weren't taken as seriously as they should've been, and the plot just didn't quite go where I wanted it to.
10. Afterschool (2008)
Not Rated | 120 min | Drama, Mystery
An Internet-addicted prep-school student captures on video camera the drug overdose of two girls.
Votes: 3,973 | Gross: $0.00M
It was a lot like Michael Haneke's "Benny's Video", but the main character wasn't quite as bad of a person, but it was entertaining whilst effectively showing the torture that videos and the internet has on the minds of youth sometimes.
11. I Spit on Your Grave: Vengeance is Mine (2015)
Unrated | 92 min | Horror, Thriller
Jennifer is still haunted by the memory of being gang raped and almost killed years ago. At her therapist's advice, she joins group therapy and meets similar women. She befriends one and they want more than just talk - justice/vengeance.
Now, I will say, I liked this one. The ending was grave (get it?), poor Jennifer, man. I think I like this one and the first sequel on a somewhat equal level, this film just held back a lot in terms of showing. Not quite as good as the first. However, I did like that the film addressed the dangerous mindset of believing that all men are rapist pigs, and that some men might seem forward, but they ultimately won't do things without consent. An interesting direction for the film to go, and I'm happy with it.
12. Freier Fall (2013)
Not Rated | 97 min | Drama
A soon-to-be-father policeman falls for a gay fellow officer and his life starts falling apart.
This movie was good, but didn't really work the way that I feel it should've. The ending was one that I think works, and I don't really feel that it needs a sequel (that is apparently in the works), because this movie wasn't really about love, it was about lust. These characters don't really love each other, even if Kay says he loves Marc, they don't really love or know each other. They don't need to see each other again. I think the way it ended is justified, Marc did a very bad thing and I think he got what he deserved.
13. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)
PG | 107 min | Animation, Action, Adventure
It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: Lego Duplo invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.
Votes: 41,648 | Gross: $105.81M
This movie's not as good as the first one, not by a long shot. Not sure it needed musical numbers, but the plot twist was good, and a lot of the film subverted my expectations, so I'm okay with it.
14. Womb (2010)
Not Rated | 111 min | Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi
A woman's consuming love forces her to bear the clone of her dead beloved. From his infancy to manhood, she faces the unavoidable complexities of her controversial decision.
This movie was deep, and sometimes confusing. One of those movies where the infusion of sci-fi can feel odd, but it told a deeply psychological story. Only at the end did I realize what the character's true motivation was: to lose her virginity to Thomas (or his clone). However, vaginas don't make a cracking sound when penetrated for the first time (hymens don't work that way), I'm sorry. But a well directed film, one with emotion and good leads.
15. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
PG | 117 min | Animation, Action, Adventure
Teen Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man of his reality, crossing his path with five counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.
Votes: 279,564 | Gross: $190.24M
I felt that for as long as this movie was, a lot of things were unnecessary, such as many of the side characters. A lot of things were brought up, and then not explored fully. Also, you really have to know Spider-Man and his history to get a lot of the in-jokes. I don't understand the reason for this movie's creation in the first place, but it was amazing and new animation, which I will give it credit for, and it was actually funny (unlike some animated films these days).
16. The Garden of Words (2013)
TV-14 | 46 min | Animation, Drama, Romance
A 15-year-old boy and 27-year-old woman find an unlikely friendship one rainy day in the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.
This was 45 minutes long, it needed to be much longer. But it was heart-breaking in some ways and I liked the direction the story went, but I kind of wished it would've worked out between the characters (however inappropriate it may be), at least it gave us hope.
17. Session 9 (2001)
R | 97 min | Horror, Mystery
Tensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back.
Votes: 50,617 | Gross: $0.38M
This movie was well-made. It had an odd twist at the end, I kind of agree with it. It just went in odd directions that weren't where it ended up. It had too many red herrings and some choices I did not agree with. I do understand its cult status, but it's not technically one of the best.
18. The Mermaid: Lake of the Dead (2018)
Not Rated | 90 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
An evil Mermaid falls in love with Marina's fiancé Roman and aims to keep him away from Marina in her Kingdom of Death under water. The Mermaid is a young woman who drowned a few centuries ... See full summary »
I did like this movie, it should've ended 20 minutes earlier, the dubbing was okay, because it was in Russian. A lot of things were too convenient, but a lot of the technical aspects were well done.
19. The First Time (I) (2012)
PG-13 | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
A shy senior and a down-to-earth junior fall in love over one weekend.
Votes: 63,597 | Gross: $0.02M
A little cliche, but it told the truth of the psychology and physicality of your first time. The ending was good and I felt satisfied. But poor Victoria Justice, she was so unnecessary in this movie.
20. Weekend (II) (2011)
Not Rated | 97 min | Drama, Romance
After a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what's expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special.
Votes: 26,068 | Gross: $0.46M
I cried really hard at the end of this. Such a fantastic portrayal of love, gay or not. It had a bit too much hate toward straight people and Glen was too obsessed with gay inequality (no offense). But unlike Free Fall, the characters actually got to know each other and fell in love, and only in a weekend. The emotion of the actors was palpable and the ending wrecked me. Now, this is a movie that deserves a sequel.
21. Spring (I) (2014)
Not Rated | 109 min | Horror, Romance, Sci-Fi
A young man in a personal tailspin flees from US to Italy, where he sparks up a romance with a woman harboring a dark, primordial secret.
Votes: 21,823 | Gross: $0.05M
Evan was a bit weird and inconsistent. The sci-fi fit quite well into the story, and it was good overall, but some things didn't make sense. The ending was heart warming, but asking someone to fall in love with you is demanding, and it won't make them do it. The logic was a little hard to follow, but the movie does make you feel.
22. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
TV-PG | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy
A high-school girl named Makoto acquires the power to travel back in time, and decides to use it for her own personal benefits. Little does she know that she is affecting the lives of others just as much as she is her own.
I liked the love interest in this film a lot, but by the end, the film got kind of confusing, and I don't know that I really liked the twist. Also, the main character seemed extremely simple and too naive at points.
23. When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
R | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
Harry and Sally have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship.
Votes: 181,909 | Gross: $92.82M
I had seen so much about this film, that I'm glad I finally went back and watched the full movie. Now, I've never loved Meg Ryan, but she did pretty well in this film. The ability to make characters older and younger worked very well, and I think it is a great love story. Also, go Carrie Fisher, finally, a good role.
24. Boys (2014 TV Movie)
Not Rated | 78 min | Drama, Romance
A sexually awakening gay teen athlete finds himself in a budding relationship with his mutually attracted relay race teammate.
The lead was a great character study, and while I don't know if I think I understand him falling for the romantic interest, I enjoyed the main character's pull towards heterosexuality through expectation throughout the film. Also, I liked the ending.
25. Tricked: The Documentary (2013)
Not Rated | 73 min | Documentary, Crime
This character-driven film considers the evolving sex trafficking landscape as seen by the main players: the exploited, the pimps, the johns that fuel the business, and the cops who fight to stop it.
This documentary wasn't really what I wanted it to be, the girls were still pretty unethical to think that being a hooker would mean you wouldn't constantly be mistreated by men. Also, I barely remember it, it was highly forgettable.
26. The Last House on the Left (1972)
R | 84 min | Horror, Thriller
Two teenage girls head to a rock concert for one's birthday. While trying to score marijuana in the city, they are kidnapped and brutalized by a gang of psychotic convicts.
Votes: 30,514 | Gross: $3.10M
There were some memorable moments in this movie, such as the "iron and steel" joke the friend makes. I liked that random black cats the rapists had. And finally, a woman bit a man's dick off on-screen. But this movie meandered a bit along the way, and the "I'm gonna rape you" scenes were a little cringey and awkward.
27. The Cement Garden (1993)
Not Rated | 101 min | Drama
Four children try to hold things together and play a family in their isolated prefab house after the death of their parents. As they begin to deteriorate mentally, they hide their mom's festering corpse in a makeshift concrete sarcophagus.
Votes: 4,212 | Gross: $0.32M
This movie was just weird, it gave me such a dark feeling throughout. The main character is kind of terrifying. I didn't like the boyfriend and wondered why he didn't leave, but the ending was satisfactory.
28. Drifters (2011)
Not Rated | 111 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
In this taboo drama, Mete must fight against his inappropriate attraction to his 17 year old half sister, who has just moved in to his flat in Rome. (Italian with English subtitles).
I loved this movie, not so much the lead female's personality, but she was alluring. This film's display of the steps of sexual attraction and denial were great, but the ending made me angry. I know they couldn't end up together, but I still wanted them to.
29. Homesick (2015)
106 min | Drama
Two half-siblings who grew up apart, meet for the first time as adults and fall in love.
This film was quite memorable and was pretty good overall. In terms of incest films, the added layer of not knowing each other made it believable and raised the stakes. The ending also made sense.
30. Sleep Tight (2011)
Not Rated | 102 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller
You wake day after day to the comfort and security of your home. But how safe is it really?
I really enjoyed this movie at certain points, the ending was quite shocking when you discover (spoiler) that the bad guy was not only creeping on the girl the whole time, he raped and impregnated her in that time. I definitely think of this as a character study.
31. Django Unchained (2012)
R | 165 min | Drama, Western
With the help of a German bounty hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.
Votes: 1,252,927 | Gross: $162.81M
It was a long but fun movie, with some WTF moments that I couldn't agree with, but some amazing moments, Quentin Tarantino definitely had his mark on this film. But Christoph Waltz, fricking fantastic.
32. Martyrs (2008)
R | 99 min | Horror
A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.
