Predictable but Reasonably Entertaining Action Film
12 January 2018 | by See all my reviews

I was planning on seeing this at first due to the slick trailers and the fact that Taraji P. Henson is a very good actress. The fact that Sony refused to screen this movie for critics almost scared me off, but I still decided to go. Overall, I had a fine time and while the film isn't great by any stretch, it is better than typical "January movies," much less films that don't get screened for critics (which are normally outright garbage.)

The film centers on Mary, an assassin who takes in a young boy who has been orphaned from a hit job gone awry. From there, Mary's loyalty to the boy as well as to the organized criminal operation she works for will be tested and questioned. Running at a lean 88 minutes, the film moves at a brisk pace, and Henson is great in the lead role. The main downside with the film is that it is extremely predictable. If you've seen one of these types of assassin films within the action genre, you know exactly how it's going to play out. Even the action scenes, for the most part, feel very derivative, with the exception of the finale: a thoroughly thrilling action scene set to (and maybe almost choreographed to as well?) Tina Turner's version of the classic song "Proud Mary." If you like Henson or these types of action films, I liked "Proud Mary" just enough not to deter you from seeing it in theaters, but all others should probably just wait to rent it due to its highly formulaic nature at times. 6/10
