Rollin At A Rushed Pace

My scores:

Action/Thriller: 6.5 Movie Overall: 5.0

Likes: --Acting Chemistry --The Writing --The Action

DISLIKES: --Incredibly Rushed --Inconsistent Emotion --Lackluster Villains

With little advertising on the internet or cable, it was hard to figure out what to expect with Proud Mary. A pleasant surprise is that the movie has good acting chemistry that feels as if they are a crime family working to expand their territory. This crime drama keeps things interesting, especially once the child character enters and the dynamic has to change. To support this family component, the writing is decent, managing to balance Mary's two sides and keep things classy and yet edgy at the same time to make an engaging character. It's big selling point comes in the form of the action, edgy/exciting you want to see in a femme fatale character. This action, while short lived, is pertinent to the story and doesn't feel so unnecessary in the long run. However, all of these components fall short of their full potential due to how fast the movie was pushed through. While most likely attributed to the low budget of the movie, this quick pace left little room for backstory, character development, and emotional engagement to the characters, leading to some confusion outside of that she is an awesome woman. The fluctuating character dynamics are uneven, leading to inconsistent characters that are hard to get a grasp on. And even in regards to the action, the movie unfortunately did not do a nice job of making villains who had more bite than bark. Proud Mary's cast of killers is surprisingly lame, their power almost a joke with the little they deliver on their threats. Still makes for some exciting action, but it could have been so much more if they could stand up to her skills a little better. Proud Mary is certainly not as epic as the song it's modeled after, but it is surprisingly entertaining for a low budget film. The fast pace will keep you engaged in the movie, especially with Mary's character herself, it just needed some more time to finesse her out and give those details you want to see. Still, for those who are Henson fans, totally give this film a shot in the theaters, otherwise you should skip this one until it comes out to rental services.
