They acknowledge classic crime-solving - Means, Motive, Opportunity - as no longer sufficient because criminality is becoming more complicated as Motive graduates from need & greed, to inexplicable and irrational reasons. They theorize applying deeper psychological evaluation will posit new questions. Simply, asking Why will lead to the Who. This series focuses on the development of two men, two agents, a new criminal field and does so through storylines of visiting the sociopathic mind. Written by sasisami

What a mixed bag
21 October 2017 | by (CPH) – See all my reviews

Possibly spoilers.

First off, I like the tempo, the premise, the Bill Tench character, the Fincher feel and part of the Wendy Carr character. And when Holden Ford got scolded for getting a characters husband fired.

After that, the show is a mess. It doesn't seem to know where it is going and what it is trying to say. Mainly because it does not go anywhere! There is so little action and conflicts in the show, that the creators creatively create drama, where no interesting drama exist.

The self-centered, constantly nagging, "I'm better than you" girlfriend, Debbie, is completely useless to the plot and makes me wanna throw my cat after her. From the horrible pick-up in the beginning, I could not find one redeeming aspect of her personality, that would validate the main character to fall in love with her. She is constantly complaining and hostile. She doesn't even have the decency to break off with him. Yuk!

Holden Ford is not much better. The show tries to make him a fluid, round character, but he just comes off as weak and immature and frankly not the best agent. He smokes weed, drives with a drunk woman, lies and cheats and for very little result. Debbie cheats on him, he sees the signs beforehand, doesn't confront her and without explanation to the audience, forgives her cheating. He is suppose to be the "fish out of sea" character, but is extremely intelligent and a bit of a prodigy when interviewing maniacs. But in all other aspects of his life, he seems utterly confused and hopelessly lost. It could be intentionally, but that's not the feeling you get.

It is notable however that the show tries to make every character suspect. We are suppose to not know who to trust. It kinda works, but since we are never really presented with a coherent plot, the dots are never really connected, like the producers forgot something.
