Writer and Director Wes Anderson hosted a competition for someone to be a member of the voice cast for this film. The only requirement was that you donated ten dollars or more to the Film Foundation, a non-profit founded by Martin Scorsese, which specializes in the preservation and restoration of film around the world.
The movie was influenced by the work of Akira Kurosawa and Rankin-Bass stop-motion Christmas specials.
Wes Anderson's eighth collaboration with Bill Murray.
Jeff Goldblum has said this will be "Japanese Influenced".
This is the first feature length film that is both written and directed solely by Wes Anderson.

This is Scarlett Johansson's seventh voice-only role in seven years. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), Her (2013), Deep Down (2014), Assassin Banana (2015), The Jungle Book (2016), and Sing (2016) were the previous six.
This is Wes Anderson's first stop-motion film since Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009).
Along with Moonrise Kingdom (2012), this Wes Anderson film doesn't have any involvement with Owen Wilson.
The film cast includes four Oscar winners: F. Murray Abraham, Tilda Swinton, Fisher Stevens, and Frances McDormand; and six Oscar nominees: Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Bryan Cranston, and Bob Balaban.
This is F. Murray Abraham's first stop-motion film.
Jeff Goldblum's first animated movie since The Prince of Egypt (1998) not counting Zambezia.
