Compelling, but has subtle racist motifs
5 May 2017 | by See all my reviews

When you first watch Fauda it is fast, filled with action, emotion, twists and turns. It is rather captivating; however, it does not provide a background as to the motivation of Arab/Palestinian characters and their resorting to terrorism. Despite it showing some humanity to the Palestinian side of the characters, the Palestinian character in the movie is portrayed as the natural villain. No history or background is given to some Palestinian characters, albeit not all, making it seem as if Terrorism is in their genes. Whereas Al-Qaeda and extreme Islamic State terrorists are simply motivated by hate and psychopathy, most Palestinians; and not to be seen as an excuse resort to terrorism as a final solution to years of oppression, displacement, occupation by the Israeli state. It is this background that is missing from the movie so the movie watcher is confused as to where did the story of abu Ahmad start. On the other hand, the Israeli characters are imbued with more moral coloring to their personality and are also painted in a wide brush as having a higher degree of morality even physical beauty. Although this is subtle, and sometimes you can see some equal parity between both peoples which shows the humanity of both sides; still, the film in general tends to racially draw a stereotypical picture of the Arab hating, knife, or bomb bearing Palestinian as a morally bankrupt individual; while bestowing a more morally superior personality make up of Israeli counter-terrorist person. It could have been more balanced, and I encourage people who watch it to go back to the history of the conflict, in order not to be prejudiced by the stereotypes that are very often unhelpful in mending fences between the two peoples and certainly misleading to the foreign viewer. Despite this flow, the episodes are engaging, the characters, except for the above mentioned are well developed, and the movie is quite unique in doing a good job of portraying this ever lasting conflict.
