Steve Carell said that Despicable Me 3 (2017) may be his last film as the voice of Gru. However, Carell stated that if he was asked to do a cameo in any future Minion sequels, he happily would.
Agnes's voice actress Elsie Fisher from the first and second movies was replaced by Nev Scharrel due to Fisher getting too old for the role.

This is the first film to have the Illumination Entertainment logo simply read "Illumination".
In one scene in Gru's lair the Minions are standing in front of a big computer machine with a green screen. The screen is actually displaying the Page R (the music sequencer screen) from a Fairlight CMI synthesiser series II which cost around £30,000 when originally launched back in 1982. It is unclear from the brief appearance in the movie what is being played back on the screen.

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

When the giant Bratt robot is attacking Hollywood, K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider (1982) can be seen reversing away.
When Mel and the other minions are roaming the streets there is a poster for a TV show called SING!, this is a reference to another film made by illumination
There are two posters titled "onions" as a parody to the minions poster. These can be seen towards the end in the Hollywood studios
The army of Bratt dolls that Balthazar Bratt sends to kill Gru are referred to as 'the Bratt pack' this is a clear reference to the name given by the media, to a group of 80s actors, popular for films such as ' The Breakfast Club' and 'St Elmo's Fire'.
When Professor Nefario accidentally freezes himself, it is a reference to Star Wars.
When Lucy uses a helicopter to rescue Gru, Dru, and the diamond from Bratt's layer, this is likely a reference to the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."
