Patiently waiting for next Sunday
15 July 2014 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

As a huge fan of the GDT/Chuck Hogan trilogy, I was quite impressed with and enthralled by the pilot episode of The Strain. From what I have read about the TV version, the series could play out over 5 seasons and will stay relatively true to its literary roots. I can only hope that this is the case and I urge viewers to be patient. The Strain is a deep and complex journey which spans years and intertwines many stories and characters that require time to develop. For those looking for a quick fix, yearning to have it all figured out by the end of the pilot episode, your reviews highlight your frustration and this may not be the show for you.

This series has fantastic potential and is off to a great start. While there is room for improvement in both the writing and acting, the overall tone created is spot on and highlights GDT's uncanny ability to create a dark and disturbing world just slightly beyond our own. I can only hope that the FX series continues to honour the spirit of one of the most unique and compelling vampire narratives ever created.

In response to the criticism of the show's high level of gore, I would advise those who are disturbed by it to cut and run now as it's only going to get worse (better). I found the first episode a little tame and cannot wait for it to really get going. This will be a dark and terrifying show if done properly, as it's literary inspiration is not for the weak of heart or stomach. Bring it on GDT-the people you made this for are ready to explore the depths of your horrific genius!
