Several cast and crew, even extras, noted that lead star/producer , Gerard Butler kept forgetting his lines.
Jerry Bruckheimer was brought in to produce at a very late stage. The studio rejected the original cut due to poor reactions from test audiences. Extensive re-shoots, featuring new material written by Laeta Kalogridis, were helmed by Danny Cannon over two weeks, for a reported $15M.
Some of the NASA scenes were filmed at the NASA facility in New Orleans, Louisiana.
This was Dean Devlin's feature directorial debut.
The film's original release date was March 25, 2016. In August 2014, Warner Bros. canceled the March 2016 date and replaced it with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). On December 11, 2014, the studio shifted Jungle Book (2018) and gave its release date of October 21, 2016 to this film. In September 2015, the studio moved the release to January 13, 2017. Later, the release was rescheduled once more, to October 20, 2017.
The film was originally set up at Paramount before getting moved to Warner Bros.
Catastrophic consequences of weather control by space-based stations is also a major plot point in Das Arche Noah Prinzip (1984), Roland Emmerich's directorial debut. Emmerich and Dean Devlin were long time collaborators.
Re-shoots took place in December 2016 under executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Laeta Kalogridis. Dean Devlin was still in charge of the film, but unavailable, so veteran director Danny Cannon was hired for the job. Katheryn Winnick, who played Jake Lawson's ex-wife, was replaced by Julia Denton.

This was Skydance's second project not released by Paramount. Instead, Warner Bros. produced the film.
Sticky Studios released a game under the same name, which Apple featured. It keeps the same premise, but follows an alternative plot with three people gathering data on Earth to locate a rogue satellite. The game is a turn-based puzzler, and generally has very positive reviews.
One satellite is called RocknRolla. Later, the film mentions Mount Olympus. Gerard Butler appeared in RocknRolla (2008) and Olympus Has Fallen (2013).

When Jake Lawson arrives on the ISS, he mentions that he and his brother Max were born in UK, but lived in the US. In real life, Gerard Butler is Scottish and Jim Sturgess is English.
