Jerry Bruckheimer was brought in to produce at a very late stage. The studio rejected the original cut due to poor reactions from test audiences. Extensive re-shoots, featuring new material written by Laeta Kalogridis, were helmed by Danny Cannon over two weeks, for a reported $15M.
The film's original release date was March 25, 2016. In August 2014, Warner Bros. canceled the March 2016 date and replaced it with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). On December 11, 2014, the studio shifted Jungle Book (2018) and gave its release date of October 21, 2016 to this film. In September 2015, the studio moved the release to January 13, 2017. Later, the release was rescheduled once more, to October 20, 2017.
Sticky Studios released a game under the same name, which Apple featured. It keeps the same premise, but follows an alternative plot with three people gathering data on Earth to locate a rogue satellite. The game is a turn-based puzzler, and generally has very positive reviews.
