Il y a longtemps que je t'aime is pretty formulaic: a member of the family shows up after a decade away, exposition is distilled in lieu of a story unfolding (introducing a family secret) with a couple of bumps to add a little rhythm in between the heavy atmosphere. And then you know it all in the end, in a way that at best you feel relieved with the characters or deeply grieving (depending on the outcome; sadistic directors like Lars Von Trier might offer you a bundle). At best you feel touched by the actors, at worst you start hating the director and start invoking capital punishment for those dirty emotional hijackers.
So the movie isn't great but Kristin Scott-Tomas and Elsa Zylberstein are very good in their parts and are essential in lifting the movie above grounded pathos. In the supporting roles the child playing the older sibling is also great, Serge Hazanavicius as the father is dull while the rest are mostly playing utilities (including two pathos-leaden male utilities that say a lot about the author's natural tilt). Eventually quite a few lines are heavily overwritten (it's the problem of having an accomplished writer behind the camera).
